I gotta ask: what's the copper foil being used for?

@hotmail.com: Grounding plane for SSB. Hanz Hanz, you don't need to use expensive copper foil that's just going to get eaten, anyways. Aluminum flyscreen or even galvanized chicken wire works just as good at 1% of the cost. Just unroll the chicken wire up out of the bilge water along the hull under the waterline and it forms a big capacitor with the seawater outside. Fold it up where the ground cable is connected to it for better conductivity so it can fan out the current..... Don't be too neat! No folds to neatly get it around a corner. RF doesn't flow around corners. |

Copper foil
I have used copper for 15 years on this boat. A great reception from
east coast USA all the way to Spain , Maderia back to Guyana and all of the Caribbean. But the copper finally disintegrated, so I'm looking for a better way for preserving it. Casady 27 bankers and lawyers with yachts just contacted their local plating companies about plating all the ground straps in the bilge.....and it's all YOUR fault....(c;] http://www.allchemie.com/group-8b.html#rho All Chemie has Rhodium foil to put in the bilge of the truly elite boats. Rhodium crashed from $10,000/oz to about $1000/oz during this depression. I'm considering moving from Gold to Rhodium, even though its much harder to sell when it's $10,000/oz in its very volitile market....no brokers. http://www.kitco.com/charts/popup/rh1825lnb.html Sure wish I'd bought a few pounds in 03 on the way UP! |

How big does it need to be? They gold plate a zillion connectors in the electronics business, but I don't know how thick. Casady |
