Default good book on re-wiring?

Can anyone recommend an exceptionally simple and straightforward book on
re-wiring a boat. I have a Westsail 32 and am thinking about re-wiring the boat
while the engine is out waiting for an eventual re-powering. That's because
most of the wiring is 25 years old and it's so easy to work in the engine
compartment with the engine out.
I guess I'm looking for a step by step guidance book for a do-it yourselfer.

Thanks

Great book, but hardly a step-by-step simple book.

If you are new to boat electrical systems, I would strongly recommend that
you find a local marine electrician to help you plan your electrical system.
The point being is that you should not try to duplicate the electrical
system on a 25 year old boat. If you are going to the expense and effort to
rewire it, you should upgrade the electrical system with modern components
and concepts, particularly if you are planning to cruise extensively (and
why else would you own a Westsail 32).

You should consider the needs of DC refrigeration, communication, inverter,
etc. I am not saying you have to have all of these (yes, I realize that the
Pardy's get by without much) but you may want it someday. At the minimum, I
would install a new DC panel and extra house batteries. This will give you a
sound foundation to build on.

Take a look at the DC wiring diagrams in West Marine's West Adviser on the
web. The diagram with a house battery bank, a separate starting battery and
a battery combiner to link them is a good, sound design.

Good luck,

David

The 12-volt Doctor's Practical Handbook by Edgar J. Beyn, is available
through quite a few marine bookshops online and downloadable sometimes if
you know where to look (I don't!) It is an excellent and well-illustrated,
comprehensive handbook for novices. I have it in .pdf format but at 10.5 mb
it would take too long to upload.

A wire is a wire, a parallel circuit is a parallel circuit and a multimeter is
a multimeter.

Ed Sherman is the instructor for the ABYC electrical courses and has a way of
making the subject easy.

Chapt 1 Electrical Basics you need to know
Chapt 2 Working with Wiring Diagrams
Chapt 3 Selecting and using a multimeter
Chapt 4 Wire and Circuit Protection
Chapt 5 Batteries and Battery Systems
Chapt 6 Battery Charging Systems
Chapt 7 Maintaining Marine Ignition systems
Chapt 8 Tracing and repairing starter motor circuits
Chapt 9 Installing DC accessories

Hi

take a look at the 12 V handbook you can find at
http://motoren.boten.nl/
On the left side you find downloads from manuals.... and the 12 V handbook
as a pdf file. I thing it will be usefull to read, brfore you start wiring
your boat.

Wiring your boat will be no fundamental problem, if you dont have 2 left
hands...

Correct, but a Westsail 32 is still a sailboat no matter what color
your electrons are.
