Magellan GPS Nav 5000
I am a newbie to the group, so ask your indulgence if I offend any protocols
here. I have a Magellan 5000 GPS unit given to me. I think it is about ten years old but it works very well. It requires either 6 dry alkaline AA batteries or 9v dc through a dc/dc converter from 12v which was once available from Magellan dealers. I have tried the internet through many sources to find one of these converters as the machine goes through alkaline cells at a great rate, but with no success. My query to the group is- the handbook shows a small 5 pin plug into which you plug the converter. Is this a standard plug that I could buy somewhere and if so which of the pins carries the 9v dc? Finally, will the machine blow up if I feed it 12v dc? David Brister Bruno Abbatte Primatiste. |

Magellan GPS Nav 5000
I had a Magellan 5000 which I bought in 1994. I ended up giving it to a friend
4 or 5 years later. He still uses it at the helm (a newer unit feeds his computer) and loves it because the full keypad allows him to punch in lat/lon directly. I think I even gave him a spare cable - I tend to buy them whenever I see a good price. My recollection is that it took 12 Volts directly, but please don't take my word for it, contact Magellan support. Unfortunately, my friend is out of email range right now - if the problem isn't solved by the Fall, email me again and I'll forward your query to him. "David Brister" wrote in message ... Magellan GPS Nav 5000
I bought one of these from a pawn shop for about $30 because they thought it
didn't work. In fact they just were not patient enough to let it do a cold start. The connector plug you need is a 5 pin female Lemo connector. I'm sure you can buy these from electronics parts suppliers but they are pretty expensive. Probably cost as much as my Magellan. I have been looking for them on eBay but not seen any female connectors yet. According to the manual the unit will run on 10 to 15 volts DC from an adaptor. The wiring for the plug is as follows: If you look at the female plug you will see a small rectangular indentation which matches a projection inside the Magellan socket. If you position the connector with the indentation at the bottom (6 o'clock) the pins are number 1 to 5 in a counterclockwise direction. pin 1 chassis ground (- DC) (5 o'clock) pin 2 transmit data (2 o'clock) pin 3 receive data (12 o'clock) pin 4 + DC ( 9 o'clock) pin 5 signal ground (7 o'clock) Hope that helps.
