Oil Pressure & Audio Warning
I have a '94 Chaparral with a Mercruiser 5.7L engine. I recently ran into a
problem when I put my boat in the water, the "Pressure Switch" (partnumber 87-805605A1 http://www.mercruiserparts.com/images/mer/2689.jpg (in picture what is the nut and washer for? the wire just pushes on) rotted and oil was spurting out. After replacing the Pressure Switch (oil replaced and pressure back to normal), WITHOUT having the engine on and when turing the key one click I get a continous audio warning, the only way to stop it is remove the wire from the Pressure Switch. When the engine is running the oil pressure is normal (see additional question below) and the alarm doesn't sound, it only sounds when the engine is off and the key is turned one click to turn on the accessories. Any suggestions?? I have straigh 40 weight oil, when running at a decent cruising speed my oil pressure is around 60-65 is that normal or should it be a little lower? Thanks for any info and help. -Matt |

Any suggestions?? That sounds normal to me - with the engine stopped, you have no oil pressure, so, when you turn the key on the "low oil pressure" alarm will sound, and will continue to sound for a few seconds after the engine starts, until the oil pressure builds up. -- Peter Bennett VE7CEI email: peterbb4 (at) interchange.ubc.ca GPS and NMEA info and programs: http://vancouver-webpages.com/peter/index.html Newsgroup new user info: http://vancouver-webpages.com/nnq |

If the alarm did not sound with the ignition on and engine stopped, you would never know if the alarm was working or not. Hearing it is a test of the alarm circuit. It is arguably a bad idea to have to leave the ignition on (with the engine not running) to use accessories. In some cases it can be hard on some things like electronic ignitions. If you had a starter switch with an accessory position, you could use that and wire the stuff like radios and sounders on the accessory position. Not having that, it sort of looks like your choices would to either put a switch in the alarm circuit to silence the alarm (not really a good idea) or upgrade yourself to a starter switch with an accessory position. This is perfectly normal-- as noted, you have no oil pressure until
you start the engine. I suspect your old pressure sensor was bad / miswired, and that is why you never experienced this before. If you need to use your sounder or accessories without the engine on, I suggest you have them rewired-- in fact, it is surprising that they would be wired to only come on with the key switch. Mine also sounds when the key is turned to the first position, I think to let you know that it is working. Maybe yours never worked until you replaced it? You have a couple of options. If available, install an ignition switch that has an "accessory" position like some cars have, which allows you to play the radio without the ign on. Another option would be to wire an accessory switch on the dash. That's what my boat has, and I have to remember to turn it off when I finish using the boat. If all your accessories have their own power switch, then you can just wire them to the same place as the radio, and then turn them all off later to prevent running the battery down. |
