AIS recieving systems
Hi!
I am searching for cheap Automatic Identification Systems, suitable for small boates. I found some on the internet, but all of theme were on the websites of dealers. What I want to know is some of the manufactores of the systems. Does anybody here know some website of the manufactores or other information? |

I've just gotten quotes from a whole heap of manufacturers, and ended up buying some from Nauticast. The Furuno FA-100 is also pretty cheap. All are between US$3k & US$4k. Manufacturers I can think of from the top of my head a Nauticast, Furuno, L3, Simrad (Seatex) Don't bother with TMQ in Australia unless they have changed tack - they first said yes & then no. Transas have a receiver-only unit - AISR T300. Euronav (www.euronav.co.uk) have a receiver-only unit - AI3000 Jotron have the Tron UAIS TR-2500 Sealinks (www.sealinks.net) have a receive-only unit & vague plans (last time I spoke to them) for a full B-class unit. If you do get into AIS I've set up a discussion forum at http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/Maritime_AIS/ It's only set up recently & not "advertised" so no members yet. I've just bought some AIS mobiles & AIS base stations which will be integrated with DGPS reference stations & ECDIS displays for a vessel traffic monitoring system. Still waiting for delivery, after which I expect to have lots of questions myself! :-) Dave The email address used for sending these postings is not valid. All replies to the group please. |

I think the one from euronav http://www.euronav.co.uk/Products/Ha...3000AIS_RX.htm is really interesting. But you need a compatible Navsoft. (e.g. Seapro or Maxsea) fair winds Michael -- "Homedrinking is killing Gastwirt!" |

Originally I was looking at getting a receiver only, but then they talked about Class B transceivers being the best option for small boats, so I waited a while. Since then I haven't found any Class B transceivers, but have watched the price of Class A units fall from US$20k to US$11k to US$5k & now finally below US$4k which was my original budget anyway. Now I may need to buy 65 of them! :-) The idea is that Class B units should cost around US$500 - the specs for them were only recently finalized, so I presume they should start coming out reasonably soon. I have installed a couple of the Furuno units for commercial customers.
Gyrocompass interfacing has to be looked into on larger vessels and so does the External GPS. Furuno's built in GPS is called the Internal. I will interfacing one soon with a Furuno AC120 GPS Compass instead of a gyro and am anxious to see how that works out. Doug K7ABX "Dave Baker" wrote in message ... Check out the following link. http://www.shinemicro.com/ Actually I did - I was looking at buying his SL162B units back in December last year when they first started advertising them, with an "Order Now!" button: http://www.sealinks.net/SL162BPage.htm Pressing the Order button took me to a broken link (as it still does), so I was surprised to get the reply to a follow-up email saying "The SL162B will begin retailing in the second quarter of 2004". Checked back again on 13th Feb asking for an update & was told " I have forwarded this request to our President to find out if we are on a schedule that will facilitate your timeframe.". Never heard from the President though. Checked again on 27th Feb & was told "We expect new product to be available in approximately 60 days. I will follow up on this question and should (sic) more information this afternoon" That was 210 days ago - never heard another thing. I note the SL162B units are still advertised on the website, but not available in the online store. "Order Now!" button still goes to broken link. And still no word whether it will be Class A or Class B. Dave The email address used for sending these postings is not valid. All replies to the group please. |

Yeah, that's going to be a hassle. Quotes for gyro interfaces are a bit worrying - US$455 for Furuno gyroconverters. I did hear that there are some cheaper Chinese units, but haven't done any research there yet. Also have to grab a large connection of plugs to hook into the main gps unit on the boats I guess. I will interfacing one soon with a Furuno AC120 GPS Compass instead of a gyro and am anxious to see how that works out. We have been using a similar product - the CSI Wireless Vector Lite unit, for a few months now. It's not hooked into AIS, but is used on drilling rigs that we move around a lot. It's a lot easier than lugging around a portable gyro unit all the time! :-) Accuracy has been great, and reliability also excellent.
