Knots being phased out?

@ursa-nb00s0.nbnet.nb.ca: Agree.. that's what they taught us in the Power & Sail Squadron courses. I'm not going sailing with ANY of you guys without my OWN GPS and charts! I wanna get HOME! Larry -- If we eliminate religion, will they stop murdering each other? |

Knots being phased out?

ps.com: Sometimes a depth sounder is appropriate in the showroom, where it has been known to get piled up pretty deep indeed. :-) Have some fun with the boat salesman in the Sperry shoes. Point to any piece of electronics on the new boat and ask, "Can you show me how this works?" The sonar WILL ping the floor under the trailer, but the reading will be wrong and no fish will show up, no matter how long he watches it. Another fun thing to do is to put the radar digital display in DEMO mode and ask him how come it can see targets so far away through the sheet metal walls of the show room....(c; For some reason, I'm not welcome in showrooms any more.... Knots being phased out?
"Bruce in Alaska" wrote in message news:bruceg- .... Nautical Miles is based on "Minute of Latitude" which does NOT change since the distance from the Equater to the Poles is ALWAYS the SAME, from any place on the EQUATER. Therefor, when dividing that distance in Degrees, MInutes, and Seconds, will ALWAYS produce the same Unit Lengths. Actually, the earth is not a perfect sphere, and the linear distance of 1 minute of latitude does vary slightly as you progress from equator to pole. One ALWAYS uses the Latitude markings for distance because they do NOT change Unit Length, EVER..... not so.... I believe the nautical mile was at one time specifically defined as equal to 1 minute of longitude *at the equator*. As a practical matter, you can apply this standard to latitude as well, using a minute of latitude as a mile indicator. This is what is taught in all the CGAux nav classes I have taught. Of course, a minute of latitude varies a bit from one place to another, as mentioned above, but for all practical purposes, the error can be discarded. |

Hi, I have been told that all new equipment, chartplotters, speedometers and the like will not have knots as a speed option. Knots will be phased out and KPH will be the new standard for marine equipment. Has anybody heard of this? If so where? Some links please if available. Thanks Oliver Fleming |
