I gotta give the companion nod to Elizabeth Sladen... While Sarah Jane was the definitive prototypical Companion, clearly Donna Noble was THE singular and most striking of the Companions - even more so than Rose Tyler. Where Sarah Jane and Rose were merely sidekicks, Donna wasn't awed by the whole Timelord thing, was fully capable of telling The Doctor where to stick it and was his equal in terms of love of life and her ability to look beyond him as Timelord and view him as a person. Tate did a great job with Donna - humor, drama, some serious acting chops - she was the best of the bunch. And don't even get me started on Martha - Martha sucked pond water. Hated her as Companion. and to Tom Baker as The Doctor. Again, it's a question of eras. I have nothing but appreciation for Tom Baker as The Doctor and he certainly had a certain verve which echoed through Ecclestone's and Tennant's performances, but where Ecclestone was a direct (and very enjoyable) reflection of Baker, Tennant became The Doctor in ways that Baker never did. Of all The Doctors, Tennant is my favorite with Baker a close second. Have you been lucky enough to catch any of the early 60's episodes with William Hartnell in the lead? Nearly 50 years and still the TARDIS travels! Oh yes - been a Dr. Who fan from the git go. I used to listen to the BBC radio shows on shortwave when I was a kid. |

I think Baker is my favorite, as he was "The Doctor" when I got to watching the series. Sort of a fond memory. Tennent is great, and much better than some of the clinkers that have been in between. And you hope that Martha gets lost in space somewhere. |

I have this argument all the time with friends who are Dr. Who fans. I still say it's an era thing - each Doctor has to be evaluated in order and in reference to his work as the ony remaining Time Lord. Certainly Baker was the base on which the current two (now three because Tennant is leaving) took a lot from, but Ecclestone took it way beyond the originals and added new dimensions - Tennant took it further and, in my opinion, there won't be another Doctor like him - he was The Doctor. I'm certainly more than willing to give the new Doctor his due when Moffat takes over, but I can't see anybody taking The Doctor to the heights Tennant did. The Companions are another matter, but certainly if Tom Baker can be called the base on which all subsequent Doctors were compared to, then Sarah Jane would take the same position for subsequent Companions. Billie Piper was a great companion and transitioned between Ecclestone and Tennant in a brilliant fashion. The problem is that there isn't any real definition of Companion and there have been a few that are controversial - for example, Astrid Perth (Kylie Ann Minogue) had all the attributes of a Companion, but only appeared in one episode with Tennant (the 2007 Christmas special - "Voyage of The Damned") and died. So with that in mind you've to move towards the modern Companions - Rose, Martha and Donna - and compare them to Sarah Jane - it's not really fair, but because of a lack of definition, that's the way it has to be. And to me, Rose and Martha were more romantic in nature. Rose was a great Companion because she had independance, could operate on her own and complimented The Doctor's various peculiarities and eventually the two became romanticaly involved. Martha, while initially an interesting Companion, was turned into an unrequited love interest and eventually became boring, dull and listless. A lot of potential story lines when south with Martha. Donna on the other hand was completely different. She was not differential to The Doctor, she was her own person, was in it for the adventure and excitement and, in some ways, was the equal of The Doctor and certainly his moral compass in ways that no previous Companion ever had. Her time ended on a very sad note which was also unusual, but considering that Tennant had already announced that he was out of the Doctor business, it made sense - Donna could never have been the bridge between Doctors that Rose was. Um.... Sorry - got a little carried away. :) |
