OTOH, yankees are usually kinda dull people, sure they are industrious
and they do well but "YAWN". Southerners have real craziness in their
culture and it sure makes life interesting. Compare yank writers and
southern writers and you get the impression the yanks rarely venture
beyond their comfort zone. Sure stereotypes make southerners look like
uneducated morons but would anybody bother watching a show about
hijinks of people in Wisconsin like they do "Dukes of Hazzard".

I really only watched the show once and I bet Bach and the rest of
those fools on that show never got within 1000 miles of Georgia.

Hard to blame them for that. The few times I was in Georgia other than
on the Atlantic coastline I didn't like it. But Savannah and the Golden
Isles I like. These days, if I even have to fly into Atlanta to get
somewhere else, I reroute so I can skip that airport entirely.

I like parts of Florida and southern Louisiana and the coast of Georgia.
The rest of the south...I don't like at all. When we drive I-95, I try
to avoid stopping anywhere in South Carolina for anything.

I've "handled" cultures all over the world. I simply don't like the
South very much. I don't like the fact that the Klan is still active in
Georgia, for example, and has recruitment posters up in rural stores not
far from Atlanta. I don't like the history of lynchings. I don't like
the display of that stupid, disgusting Confederate flag. That sort of thing.

Madison is a pretty liberal area, and it attracts and retains some of
the best minds. While there are exceptions, of course, I think you will
find that generally the liberal areas attract the best and brightest
minds. A Southern state for which that is true? North Carolina, around
Chapel Hill, and, of course, Northern Virginia, near DC. Virginia and
North Carolina are now both blue states.

While Tallahassee is a hotbed of liberalism by Florida standards, the
state itself is quite backwards. Lots of talk about education, really
crappy pay for teachers. Too many religious fundamentalists. Not enough
stress on intellectual activities. The best thing to do in Tallahassee
when I visited in decent weather was to sit on the steps of the FSU
library and girl watch. It was either that or head over to Books-a-Million.

Example: soon after we moved to the Jax area, I was in need of some
bibliographic references, so I went to three of the local public
libraries in search of same. Nada. Not a hit. The libraries in fact had
very few books, I thought. But there was plenty of money around to
refurbish a football stadium for a millionaire's new NFL team.

I did find the books I needed down in Gainesville at the University of
Florida library.

Here's a telling, if not really true, anecdote. Most of the tales
surrounding the landing of flying saucers (aliens) involve swampy
southern areas. They never seem to land on the campus of the University
of Chicago.

I was going to say that I've witnessed more overt racism in areas up here in
the north than I ever witnessed in the south, including the Carolinas,
Georgia and Florida. I am not talking about the 50's and 60's. I am

I have lived all across the country and have had dealings with people
from all corners of the country and the people who are the most
concerned with race are from the North East, specifically New England.
Next would be the Upper Mid-West, Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan,
Indiana and Illinois. There are more racists from the North than there
ever have been from the South.
