I am pimping my daughter out to Bill Gates. Bought her a new laptop with
Vista on it, we'll see what happens. The system is a dell with a 2GHz
processor with 3GB RAM and a 160 GB disk. I figured for $450 I couldn't go
wrong even if it dies in two years it is still a bargain.

I was in Best Buy yesterday getting some blank CD and DVD disks and happened
to browse through the computers on display. This one caught my eye and I
was going to buy the package, but they only had the version with less RAM
(and minus a few other features) in stock. Thinking of ordering it
direct from HP on-line.
I liked it's small size .... sorta a hybrid between a conventional tower
computer and a laptop. I can't imagine needing a 500GB hard drive. The HP
Laptop I use now has an 80 GB hard drive and, after several years of use and
adding many applications, music, videos, etc. it still has about 70 GB of
unused capacity.

I've had very good luck with the HP Pavilion Laptop that I use now, as has
my wife with her similar version.
Mine's quite a few years old now and I expect it to blow up someday soon so
I am already thinking of it's replacement. Going to Vista doesn't get me
all excited, but I really haven't tried it much and am only going by the
industry reaction to it. Switching to a Mac just isn't in the cards. I
don't have the level of interest in computers to get into running software
emulators and/or stocking up on new applications to do stuff.

That looks like a pretty good deal. Nowadays you don't need to worry
about the ability to add stuff internally to a system. The important
items are USB ports and Firewire (1394). For backups you can buy and
external USB disk or go with an on-line backup service (I've started to
use one to backup digital photographs and some encrypted documents).

The only consideration is if you are a serious gamer or musicer. Then
you are going to want a high dollar video card or a high dollar
MIDI/Sound card. But, if you are looking for a general purpose computer
the price is reasonable.

The transition isn't that, Richard. If, for example, you write stuff or
do spreadsheets with the Microsoft Office package, the same package is
available to run on MACs in MAC mode. Same with Thunderbird, Firefox,
and many other apps. You really would not have to "buy" very many apps,
I would guess.

Just call up Microsoft and say I bought a Mac and I want to transfer my
MS Office license from my PC to my Mac. The will tell you that you can
do it very easily buy purchasing a copy of MS Office for your Mac.

But I won't argue against VISTA. It works fine for me.

As long as you have enough RAM.

RAM is cheap. No reason not to have what you need.

I rarely (if ever, now that I think about it) play games on the computer.
I use it mostly for midi sequencing and manipulation ... basically as a
musical word processor (using CakeWalk) to correct all my screwups after I
record something using one of the keyboards. Other than checking the
finished file, I use the sound engines in the keyboards for "live"
performances.

I mess around with audio recordings using programs like "Audacity" and a
couple of others, but most anything important enough to save is burned to a
CD. Same with pictures taken with the camera. That's why the computer I
have now still has most of it's hard drive unused.

Lately I've been making slide show presentations and converting them to
DVD's. It's fun, but probably just a bored, winter time, cold, snowy,
crappy season type activity.

Not a thing.

I just can't understand why you wish to start the day that way.
Reggie has
always been very gentlemanly towards you, even when he's caught you
in some
of your more blatant 'misstatements'. He doesn't call you names, and
treats
you with appropriate respect.

He's also quite knowledgeable about boats and photography. He's even
given
you several valuable tips with regards to both.
In fact, you may want to change your signature to be more in line
with how
you should feel.

I cannot recall one useful tip from Reggie about anything. He did
offer * up one in the last week about a remote photo shutter device,
but when I asked a few photographers who use and are still using the
device, it turned out Reggie's advice was wrong on that, too.

Boating tips from Reggie? Surely you jest.

I say, ESAD, Reggie. The sooner the better.

Have a nice day, John.

Well it does look like you took my advice on Windows Vista and are going
to switch over to Mac. *I am glad I could be of assistance.

There's no connection. I have no problems with VISTA, I simply like the
MAC hardware and apps better than I like Windows apps.

I think you are the only one in the world that hasn't had a problem
with Vista.

Gaming keeps me making my own.
And I like big honking cases for cooling and easy component swaps,
though recent chips run cooler. I could probably fit a dozen laptaps
in my main PC case.
Not too good for a boat though. When I get the boat I'll be looking
at laptops.
Don't know much about Macs. When I worked IT at McDonalds
marketing they were using Macs, but they got pushed off them.
It was a pain converting data back and forth.
People get attached to the tech they're using, much like they get
attached to car brands.
Don't know how many times I heard crap from Mac fans about how
MS "stole" stuff from the Mac OS. Recycle bin for one.
Think MACs were a better bet for college kids when the OS was more
reliable than Win9x. But after XP came along that edge became less.
Still got one of my girls a Mac laptop for university when she did an
overseas program, because that's what she wanted and she said the
school folks recommended it. No sense fighting hall there.

Well, he doesn't have any friends, he's so insecure about what he does
have that he has to make up wild lies about his boat, his house, his
land, his vehicles, even his wife. The only person here that buys into
all of those lies is Don. That in a nutshell is why he's such an angry
fat old fart.

Besides, consistency of feelings is one of my admirable attributes. *:)

Hey, Harry, speaking of cowards, you keep calling me silly third grade

kicking your ass, so I presented you with a little wager. Nothing but
crickets, huh, coward?
