Anti-Smoking Advocate Is Named to Health Post
By ROBERT PEAR
NY Times

WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama said Tuesday that he had
chosen the head of a leading anti-tobacco organization to be the No. 2
official at the Department of Health and Human Services.

The prospective nominee, William V. Corr, is executive director of the
Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, a nonprofit group that seeks to reduce
tobacco use among children and adults.

As a member of the Obama transition team, Mr. Corr has led efforts to
review and evaluate the work of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Mr. Obama has selected Tom Daschle, a former Senate Democratic leader,
to be secretary of health and human services. If confirmed by the
Senate, Mr. Corr would be the deputy secretary. From 1998 to 2000, Mr.
Corr worked as chief counsel and policy director for Mr. Daschle, when
Mr. Daschle was minority leader.

***The new Congress is expected to move aggressively against the tobacco
industry, by increasing federal regulation of cigarettes, raising taxes
on tobacco products and approving an international tobacco control
treaty.***

As a senator, Mr. Obama, an intermittent smoker, was a co-sponsor of a
bill that would have given the Food and Drug Administration broad
authority to regulate “the manufacture, marketing, and distribution” of
tobacco products, including cigarettes.

On its Web site, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids says its goals are
“to prevent kids from smoking, help smokers quit and protect everyone
from secondhand smoke.”

Let's see...raise cigarette taxes by $2.50 a pack to start and raise
cigar taxes by $10 a cigar. Good start. :) Next, outlaw smoking on the
public's streets and sidewalks.

I guess they'll never ban tobacco outright. That'd be like shooting
themselves in the foot. Is this smart Government?
Smokes already hit (at one time ) 10 bucks a pack with their new tax
gouges...it only encouraged us (yes I'm a smoker) to go to the
Reserve, BYPASSING the tax system, and leaving the Govt. wondering
what the hells going on (because all the store owners that made 75% of
their PROFIT... through the sale of Tobacco, and are now HURTING )....
Is THIS smart Govt. ?
IF they REALLY wanted the public to quit...they'd ban Tobacco
completely.......dont you think?

Most folks don't have a Res to go to conveniently. I think for what
it costs the taxpayer in public health care, tobacco both wholesale
and retail should bear a good portion of the real burden.

The cost of smoking to our society is a hidden tax that no one
considers when discussing our progressive tax system. We should.

Based on how many people end up in public hospitals dead or with gun
shot wounds (costing public hospitals hundreds of millions of dollars
annually), gun manufacturers and consumers should go on the hook for a
nice big percentage. Maybe just handgun related, cops would get their
supplies tax free.

Everyone wants freedom to have and do whatever they please, few
willingly face the cost of that freedom.

For someone who's supposed to be liberal, it's amazing that you are so
prejudiced about so many things and so many groups of people.
Would you say "deeeeelightful" if the government were to ban boating
on Chesapeake because of the pollution (and stink) caused by boats?

Or if Potato chips and Big Macs were taxed to the same levels as
Tobacco. Either way, cigs are only about $1.25 a pack if you roll em'
yourself. There is no tax other than state sales tax on bulk tobacco.
Most are just too lazy to roll em' themselves, just sit and smoke and
complain.

Smart...

"A decision by a Nova Scotia municipality to ban smoking on a popular
downtown street known for its shops and restaurants is part of a
national trend to criminalize a legal behaviour, says a smokers' rights
advocate.

"Smokers are viewed as criminals at this point in time, and that's
exactly the goal of the anti-smokers groups," Arminda Mota, president of
mychoice.ca, said Tuesday about the ban in Truro.

"What they want is to make everybody believe that smokers are not good
people — that not only are we putting ourselves in danger, but that we
are killing everybody else with our smoke."

How much does he owe in back taxes that were "overlooked"?
