Betcha there are a few in Wash DC breathing a sigh of relief.

Agreed.

At least a couple Ma-deuces, and even mini-guns would help

Arm that 13 man crew. The ones who have a half mile of railings to
watch for ladders and grappling irons.[Emma Maersk]

It is true that there are many smaller ships, with bigger crews.

It cost about 2 to 3 million bucks for a stabilized 20mm mount.

That leaves spray and pray, and the Gatling doesn't need to be bigger
than 5,56mm. No armor on those outboard motors. Shoot if you see guns
and ladders.

Alternately, we could give our mighty military forces and the mighty
military forces of other interested countries something useful to do for
a change. A few carriers and protective ships in the area, helped by
satellites and flyovers from carrier jets and prop planes, would do it.
We can easily keep track of the merchant vessels, and we can in real
time keep track of suspicious activities by the dinky boats and ships
the pirates operate.

Pffftt. Hopefully, nobody here is litening to you as your assumption
is way off. According to Navy officials it would take 60 ships to
handle that area. Do you know how many ships we currently have in our
Navy? C'mon Harry, get some facts then come back and talk snerk
Here's a hint, think 300...

The navy are smoking crack then. 4 ships it all it would take. 3 escorts
and a flat top and fly to the target. I could only see 60 ships if you
planned an wholescale invasion of Somalia. Somalia is smaller than Texas.-

That's what they said it would take to protect and monitor all of the
traffic in that area... Don't ask me, it was a Navy guy who explained
it. You just can't monitor all the traffic in that area and pick out
the bad from the innocent unless the Pirates flew the Jolly Roger.
Remember, we would have apologist groups like the UN claiming that
every boat was an innocent and fighting for pirates rights.. It could
get real messy.. I still think private security is the answer...

And I conceed, I think you are right. Private security is all it would take
logistically. Politicially, make it cool to kill pirates. Even a bounty.

It's not land mass that needs to be patrolled. It's hundreds of
thousands, if not millions of square miles of ocean.

Think about Coast Guard search and rescue missions that know within a
hundred square miles of where a small boat is in trouble. Without a
beacon or GPS coordinates, they often search for days unsuccessfully.
Pirate boats aren't exactly broadcasting their positions.

It isn't search and rescue. You mean one aircraft carrier with a standard
escort can't protect the Texas coast line in fair weather?

Woosie comes to mind. These are only little boats.... it would be like
shooting gophers.

It's not a question of protecting. It's a question of positively
identifying thousands of small boats zipping around, up and down the
coastline and figuring our who's a threat and who's not.

In fact, I think the Navy would have a tough time doing that on a warm
mid-summer weekend afternoon off the coast of MA, say between Boston and the
Cape. The main shipping lanes to and from Boston run along this area with
large merchant ships and hundreds of small boats zipping around in the same,
general area. How can you possibly identify and stop a potential threat?
Radar and/or visual can tell you one or more little boats are converging on
a tanker, but they may simply be pleasure boats taking pictures. Or they
might be pirates. By the time you got a small boat over to inspect, they
are either gone or aboard.

There is no positive evidence anyone ever walked the plank. Why
bother? Why rig out the plank, when all that is needed is a quick
slash to the throat, or if you hate the guy, a stab in the guts? I
think the gut stab, less messy, and he won't resist much when a couple
of guys shove him over the rail.

I was reading about the Barbary Pirates and Jefferson. According to the
historical accounts, the US Navy sailors went out of their way to make
examples of captured pirates. They were mutilated, decapitated, heads were
put on pikes and displayed to remaining pirates to see and get impressions
of.

Nice guys, those early sailors.

Hell, it might have been jealousy talking. Most of the pirate ships of
the "Golden Age" were democracies. Captains were elected. Their cruises
could be highly lucrative to all of the crew. Injured crewmen were even
compensated for injuries. Contrast that with traditional ships where the
Captain was all powerful, floggings were a common occurrence, and many
crew were pressed into service.
