Just got a card from my father in law, who was up in western Canada last week for his annual 10,000 mile train vacation. He likes Canadians, too, and claims they are much more "relaxed" than the folks he encounters stateside. Did he take the dome car through the Rockies? That's quite a trip. I did it in February 1969. Dunno. I know he's done the Dome Car bit, but I am not sure what his route was this time. I'm not sure the railroads still run those dome cars of history...there are more modern versions, I believe. I'm not the big railboard buff...he is. |

I know a group of folks who have done it on " Jiggers " ...those little rail buggies that are motorized.They got running rights from the Railroad, but had to work around their schedule. At times, they had to pull off the main line and wait for a passing train, but just motel'ld it, or pitched tents.. Now THAT would be a trip ! Season permitting. It reminds me of that old Buster Keaton B&W movie. I think it was called " The Railrodder ". If you haven't seen it, he comes up from sleeping on the shore of the Ocean, to find the Jigger running while the operator has a leak. Hops on, and accidentally hits the brake. He travels through the countryside of Canada, and at the end, hops off to take a leak and another hobo does the same to him. Funny stuff. There's also a box on the front of the thing, and from it, he brings out all sorts of things. |

If so, isn't the cable bolted to the drum when it's put on? Is this like a Windlass, or an actual Winch? |
