Martinez quits with a year left. Not to challenge for another seat
but just doesn't want to complete his contract with the people of
Florida.

Another example of personal responsibility and double standard.

By doing so, he gives the Republican governor the chance to name a
Republican successor. I think Florida law allows the governor, Charlie
Crist, to name himself. Crist is the leading GOP contender for the
Martinez seat...

Martinez himself had a somewhat checkered term as senator. :)

Jeb Bush would seem a logical choice.

Sounds right. It's pretty funny to watch these Rs quit so they don't
have to live through the frustration that every other elected official
experiences. They want the glory but they're unwilling to suffer the
pain. Personal responsibility at its lowest.

It's the "Palinization" of politics. :)

Yes, I'm quitting to serve you better.

The contract for Republican office holders should only cover the
period within which they think they can be effective and then some
stand-in should do the rest.

They clearly don't realize they're just stand ins from the start.
