These were caught off the dock behind my sister's condo in Punta
Gorda, where we stayed almost 2 weeks. Real nice walking about 60 feet from the back door to fish. Sheepshead wife hooked - the net is 17" across. My shoe is 12"' long. Size 10. Good to know some measures so you don't need a tape. The teeth is why they call them Sheepshead. http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/IMG_1588.jpg Another I caught, about the same size. http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/IMG_1598.jpg Spade wife caught - about 14" Biggest I've seen, though they get bigger. http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/IMG_1650.jpg Check the teeth on this little *******, a Mangrove Snapper. Those teeth are still growing now. http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/IMG_1668.jpg Sheepshead and spades are good eating, but I didn't clean any fish there. All went back. Cut 2 lines for swallowers. Caught maybe 50-60 fish in many hours of fishing. Maybe 25-30 hours. Had to be patient. These pics were the biggest - except that snapper. Bobber fishing, frozen shrimp. Usually had a whole herring on a tight line rig too, but that didn't produce anything but some chew marks. Bought some frozen squid, but never opened the box. Tides didn't seem to matter, nor time of day. High tide did seem to be the worse fishing, but who knows. Hot as hell, so we mostly fished late afternoon. Wife hates alarm clocks on vacation, so I only persuaded her to get up at daybreak once. We got skunked. Fishing is like a box of chocolates. Never know what's inside the water. That's how I like it - mostly. Just enjoyed watching the bobbers, drinking cold iced tea and getting bit by no-seeums towards sunset. Others caught were small Mangrove snappers, one Yellow Jack and one catfish, all small except the jack was over a foot. But plenty of nice-sized spades worth cleaning if I wanted to. Might have done if a cleaning station was set up there. Wife beat me in catches about 2:1. Good for her. Bitch. Just kidding. --Vic |

This particular canal is maybe one of the best for fishing, as there is absolutely no boat traffic there, as it dead ends and is about as far as you can get from Charlotte harbor in Punta Gorda. Saw that one resident had his boat tied to a dock the first couple days we were there, then it was gone. Probably stored it and headed north. The canal is there is bigger than most, and the opposite shore is undeveloped, being a bird sanctuary. Here's the location for Google earth if you care to look at the dock. 26?54'28.16"N 82? 3'33.31"W You can paste it into the "Fly to" box as is. Pretty neat. Only canal I fished down there. Some might be better. But if you don't fish, it could get boring. Think I like St. Pete Beach better for vacation, seeing as I don't have a boat to tie to that dock. Always something to see on the beach, even if you just look at the surf and tidal pools. Course there's plenty else with other attributes. I like to swim some too. --Vic |

Never saw that but anything's possible down there. We got rained out of fishing too many afternoons. Fully half the time we were there the clouds rolled in about 4-5 PM and it started raining. Always from the east. Then one day we went out about 3 PM to trick the rain. We kept our eye on the east as we got skunked. About 5 we packed it in and it started coming down as we reached the door. From the west! That one was a draw as to who was tricking who. --Vic |
