Headed for St. Johns River and adjacent creeks near Mayport, FL for some
fishing on an incoming tide. Fished a creek that gave us shelter from the
wind. Wife caught an inshore NE Florida grand slam: trout, redfish,
flounder; even a black drum. I ran the boat and rigged the tackle.

Quarter ounce chartreuse jigs with live shrimp was the go-to rig for the
day.

A brother-in-law took me 'cane pole popping' for bass on the St.
John's. We caught a boat load of bass. Then we ran out of gas and put
up in a cabin by the river. Sometime during the middle of the night an
air boat picked us up. They'd been out searching.

An airboat ride at night is great, except that the owner didn't have
enough ear muffs to go around. Those damn Lycomings are noisy.

Almost lost my sister from an airboat a few years ago. She and her husband
were frog-gigging at night. Bothe of them have been known to tip a few Buds
while on the water. I guess they thought it gave them x-ray vision so it was
safe to go hell-bent in the dark. When the boat hit a stump at more than 25
mph, she kept going while the boat was impaled on the stump. Luckily,
husband was strapped in. Sister was okay following some first aid and
hospital treatment.

Man, you are full of scary stories today!

This guy had some big spotlights on the boat. You'd have thought they
were aircraft landing lights.

Having never been on an airboat before, I was driving from Cocoa to
Tampa, and stopped by this local watering hole on the water, where
several were tied up. A had a beer or two, and asked if anybody would
give me a ride on one. Local guy downs his Bud, says, by me a beer!
Okay says I. I don't know how long he'd been there, but he sure took
me for one hell of a ride! I got my beer's worth!

This was many years ago, and they didn't offer airboat rides for
tourists, I do know that! But, like I said, buy a swampbilly a beer,
and I was off!
