http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead_poisoning
Lead, one of the leading causes of toxicity in waterfowl, has been known
to cause die-offs of wild bird populations.[122] When hunters use lead
shot, waterfowl such as ducks can ingest the spent pellets later and be
poisoned; predators that eat these birds are also at risk.[153] Lead
shot-related waterfowl poisonings were first documented in the US in the
1880s.[69] By 1919, the spent lead pellets from waterfowl hunting was
positively identified as the source of waterfowl deaths.[154] Lead shot
has been banned for hunting waterfowl in several countries,[69]
including the US in 1991 and 1997 in Canada.[155]
----

If you are a hunter, you should be in favor of this bill. Everybody
should be in favor of getting the lead out of the environment, as we did
with leaded gasoline. It is particularly toxic to small children.

If you live where little hunting takes place, this bill wouldn't make
too much difference to your health. On the other hand, the exposure of
waterways to lead shot would spread the lead in the environment of your
quarry, and possibly into your water supply. Like top predators, we will
end up concentrating the lead into ourselves.

Obviously, there are concerns about legislation restricting rights, but
we need to be smart about this.

Per lil abner :

Could be wrong, but I *think* I heard my son-in-law-the-farmer
say that lead ammo was already illegal in his area (Berks County,
Southeastern Penna, USA).

There's nothing dumber than uninformed righties like abner...

"EPA today denied a petition submitted by several outside groups for the
agency to implement a ban on the production and distribution of lead
hunting ammunition. EPA reached this decision because the agency does
not have the legal authority to regulate this type of product under the
Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) – nor is the agency seeking such
authority..."

A ban on lead shot for water fowl hunting was phased in beginning in 1986
and finalized in 1991. Lead shot is also now banned for shotgun hunting
occurring near wetlands in national wildlife refuges...

=======

The EPA issued a ruling that the issue was not within their
jurisdiction. A ban on lead fishing sinkers are still under
consideration however.

Backdoor attempt by anti-gunners to restrict firearms rights. Death by a million cuts methodology.

There are alternatives to lead in ammunition, but it raises the cost substantially. Common sense is
needed with this issue.

The common sense of not polluting the environment, or the common sense
that the EPA won't mess with the NRA in an election year?

the common sense that expended lead ammunition is not hazardous waste.

That expended lead ammunition is not hazardous waste isn't common sense,
it's wrong. If you don't live in a hunting area, or have a waterway that
passes through a hunting area, or if you don't live near a firing range,
the bill would have little impact on your health. On the other hand if
you take game in an area that has been used for hunting, you may be
bringing home lead in the game that you eat. Carbon dioxide and water
form carbonic acid, which is enough to make lead mobile.
You have a right to your opinion, but not your facts.
