During his rise to political prominence, Republican U.S. Sen. Marco
Rubio frequently repeated a compelling version of his family’s history that had special resonance in South Florida. He was the “son of exiles,” he told audiences, Cuban Americans forced off their beloved island after “a thug,” Fidel Castro, took power. But a review of documents — including naturalization papers and other official records — reveals that the Florida Republican’s account embellishes the facts. The documents show that Rubio’s parents came to the United States and were admitted for permanent residence more than two-and-a-half years before Castro’s forces overthrew the Cuban government and took power on New Year’s Day 1959. --- Heh heh heh. |

Birthers say Rubio, who was born in Miami, is ineligible to be President under Article 2 of the Constitution, which says “”no person except a natural born citizen … shall be eligible to the Office of President,” |

I have been watching and waiting to see the reaction here and it appears to be nada. There was a 10 second story on the local news and it went away. Even that was a pretty soft punch. I guess Rubio is still Cuban enough for the Cuban ex-pats and I doubt the anglo republicans care at all. They just like him because he is a clean cut looking guy who punches all the right buttons on their agenda. This really seems to be something the Chris Matthews people have latched onto and it may cast a shadow on him being a shoo in for a VP slot but I doubt his senate seat is in jeopardy. Now, if he pops up being a baby daddy for a little black kid or his gay lover writes a book, you guys might have something. Neither would totally shock me. I have been around too long to be shocked about politicians. He and Charlie Crist are an item. I heard it from Hannity. A lot of people in Tallahassee have been waiting for Crist to come out. That rumor has been around for years. What would Crist do if his "fan" was stolen like Obama's tele-prompter was stolen recently? Would Crist have a Nixonian episode. |

For the clueless: Charlie Crist is well-liked by folks in both parties. It's too bad *thinking* Republicans like Crist can't get anywhere in today's GOP. |

The system does need some kind of fixing. We have university presidents making close to a million a year and running mediocre schools. They just caught one of them (Walker at Edison) who was playing fast and loose with course certifications and now, suddenly, thousands of diplomas are essentially toilet paper. If the kids actually want the education they thought they were borrowing money for, they have to borrow more money and take some classes again. Of course the bad K012 program that is feeding the university system sucks too and that certainly isn't because we are not throwing enough money at it. Lee County spends about $20,000 a student year, k-12 and it still takes 5 years to get a 4 year degree because they have to take a year of remedial high school in college. Our problem is pretending for 12 years that all the students are going to college. I do think high school should have more vocational classes. These days that might be some basic computer skills and the concepts of good customer service because we are creating a service economy. For that matter college does not really prepare most kids for actually getting a job, unless it is just witty banter over the counter at Starbucks about art appreciation while you are serving a mocha latte. And I think we should have the Netherlands (and German - maybe all of Europe) system of tracking students after eighth grade based on their performance thus far. The best are university tracked. The lowest are vocation tracked. The system sure keeps parents interested in their kid's performance! |
