I am a blind rafter and I also love outdoor style knives. What is a good
knife to take white water rafting, and what different situations call for using a knife on a river trip? -- Vinnie All outgoing email is scanned by E-Trust |

The only thing I've ever used the knife for is to cut cheese & sausage. Many rafters I know like something with plyers built in (e.g. the Gerber or Leatherman). --Chris |

Stick with a basic gerber knife that is secure yet not too hard to access.
Most people only will use it to cut food, but the one time you need it, you'll be glad you have a easy accessible river knife. check out mec.ca, they have some good prices on gerbers. I'm not sure what rafting hazards would require a knife, but if entanglement is the main hazard, you might want to consider one of the Benchmade Rescue hooks rather than a knife. They slice through rope, cord and webbing effortlessly, but unlike a knife, they can't impale you or your raft. I use their Model 6 H2O for sea kayaking and keep a knife in with my food, where it's actually useful. BTW, the Gerber River Shorty knives that are often touted are worse than useless as they come out of the package. I have never seen a factory "edge" that's so dull. You couldn't cut yourself on one if you tried! |
