Default Speaking of alternator belts

Am I correct in assuming that the only way to change the alternator/water
pump belt on my 1977 Mercruiser 165 is to dissassemble the front motor
mount? I tend to forget about looking into this until I find myself looking
at the front of the engine or until someone mentions belts.

I imagine it is very similar to the 3 liter Mercrusier engines, and if so
the answer is yes, you have to kind partially disassemble the front mount.
Really pretty easy.
If you are sharp you will purchase 2 belts....slip both through the mount
when you install the new one and when the newly installed belt breaks at the
most inopportune moment....you have a new belt ready to go in a matter of
minutes.....cheap insurance!!!

Great idea but be sure to keep replacing the belts in pairs. Living a few years
twisted up in the bilge is as bad as living there and going around the pulleys.

Still cheap tho.

It is probably much the same as the engine I have... there should be a small
spacer that you can remove by taking out 2 bolts... this doesn't allow the
engine to move... it should be on the right hand side of the mount... I
think I can see them in the picture... If you are unclear of what I'm
saying, email me and I can try to help you out... I was under the same
impression but it was a breeze... 2 bolts, no movement in the engine, spacer
goes right back in with no problems and I was set... easy job!

Good luck!
