For Don and Harry
Harry, of course, because of his liberal arts education thinks that
everything in the English language is cut and dry. Perhaps he should read this. As far as Don, he tries SO hard to correct other's stuff, except Harry's, that he fails to fix his own screed. "The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that the English language is as pure as a crib-house hooker. It not only borrows words from other languages; it has on occasion chased other languages down dark alley-ways, clubbed them unconscious and rifled their pockets for new vocabulary." - James Nicoll |
