Intelligence Study Links Low I.Q. To Prejudice, Racism, Conservatism Are racists dumb? Do conservatives tend to be less intelligent than liberals? A provocative new study from Brock University in Ontario suggests the answer to both questions may be a qualified yes. The study, published in Psychological Science, showed that people who score low on I.Q. tests in childhood are more likely to develop prejudiced beliefs and socially conservative politics in adulthood. I.Q., or intelligence quotient, is a score determined by standardized tests, but whether the tests truly reveal intelligence remains a topic of hot debate among psychologists. Dr. Gordon Hodson, a professor of psychology at the university and the study's lead author, said the finding represented evidence of a vicious cycle: *People of low intelligence gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, which stress resistance to change and, in turn, prejudice,* he told LiveScience. Why might less intelligent people be drawn to conservative ideologies? Because such ideologies feature "structure and order" that make it easier to comprehend a complicated world, Dodson said. "Unfortunately, many of these features can also contribute to prejudice," he added. Dr. Brian Nosek, a University of Virginia psychologist, echoed those sentiments. "Reality is complicated and messy," he told The Huffington Post in an email. "Ideologies get rid of the messiness and impose a simpler solution. So, it may not be surprising that people with less cognitive capacity will be attracted to simplifying ideologies." --------------------------------------------------------- John F. Kennedy had an IQ of 117 .... above average, but no Einstein who had an IQ of 160. Abraham Lincoln had an estimated IQ of 128. Bill Clinton has an IQ of 137 George W. Bush has an IQ of 125 Adolph Hitler had an IQ of 141. A high IQ has nothing to do with what a person is. A high IQ is nothing to be particularly proud or boastful about. It' a gift at birth. It's what you do with the IQ that you have that qualifies and classifies you as a person. The study wasn't about "high" or "low" IQ tests but a correlation between "people who score low on I.Q. tests in childhood are more likely to develop prejudiced beliefs and socially conservative politics in adulthood." -------------------------------------------- I understand that. I was not commenting on the study you cited. I was commenting on those who think they are superior in some way because they were gifted with a higher than average IQ. First of all, they didn't earn it and second of all not all put it to productive use. =========================== As a girl told me when I was stationed in Biloxi in 1965. We have white trash with little skills. But no one wants to be at the bottom of the totem pole, so they use racism to raise their esteem in their own eyes. One of the the major problems with racism in the south. |

It's no wonder the conservative movement can appeal to the six-pack and fundy communities, who gravitate towards simple lifestyles and simple answers. Bumper sticker logic brings comfort to those who are uncomfortable wrestling with complex issues. =============================== Seems as if there are a lot more dumb Democrats than Republicans. Just from the number of Dems register vs. Repubs. And you look at the reverse racism of cities like Detroit and Chicago who are probably 95% Democrat it seems as if low IQ is not a requirement for right wing racism. |

Bumper sticker logic brings comfort to those who are uncomfortable wrestling with complex issues. ---------------------------------------------------- I've seen people with barely average IQ's accomplish some great things. They just work harder at it. Without a doubt, and plenty of people with above average IQs squander the gift. But the vast majority of those on the IQ bell curve remain true to their ability to comprehend, store information and synthesize ideas and plans. Those on the lower end of the curse are trapped by an inability to deal well with complexity and therefore gravitate towards simple answers as a way to gain comfort and peace. Will Rogers had it right when he said "If stupidity got us into this mess, why can't it get us out." |

I'm sure you've got plenty of stats to support your assertion. Not. Given the institutional racism that's existed in this country for hundreds of years, you think that would be trumped by people's tendency toward conservatism, assuming a low IQ? |
