I'm not a fan of ebooks, but my wife is. She downloads a couple a week
from our local public library, and also downloads "freebies" via her
Amazon "prime" account. But she still visits the library to borrow
traditional books, too. So do I.

It seems like all of the "hot books are fiction and I don't read that
anymore. Real life is unbelievably interesting enough for me.

As some may have guessed I am a Thomas junkie, actually reading the
bills few of our representatives and none of the media ever read.

I found this gem in the first "Sandy bill" (H.R.1)

"For an additional amount for `Procurement of Ammunition, Army',
$1,310,000, to remain available until September 30, 2015, for
necessary expenses related to the consequences of Hurricane Sandy:"

Huh? Why does the Army need a million three of extra ammunition "for
necessary expenses related to the consequences of Hurricane Sandy:"?

How many of the survivors do they think they will need to shoot?

It is that **** that makes Boehner look correct in not taking the bill
seriously.

As if the Army does any good with its bullets.

Well, perhaps if you weren't using a 19th Century news reader
like Forte
Agent...

There are a number of reasons for using a simpler news reader than
Outlook or some other bloatware.
For one thing, it runs off a thumb drive and will execute on any
windoze platform without actually being installed. That is handy if
you have more than one machine.

You must follow some usenet groups other than rec.boats, because
carrying a thumb drive to be able to read this one from any windoze
machine seems a waste of time and effort, considering the lack of
content here.

Facebook, interestingly, updates itself to its users no matter what
machine they are on. If I visit with my iMac and then the next
day visit
with my tablet, my stuff to read is just where I left it after I
logged
out with the iMac...the old stuff I've already read is way down
at the
bottom of the list. Of course, no one really gives a damn about
usenet
anymore, so development ceased ages ago.

Facebook is a marketing tool, data mining specifically. There is no
other value to anyone but its users than the data and their
interconnections.

Yup, FB is real hard looking to have every face tagged.. Even try
to get
your friends to put tags to your face in there. I am sure they already
have all the data they need for a full face recognition on most of the
county by now....

Insane Scotty thinking Facebook is going to take over the world..
Like a
guy I heard call in on the radio yesterday, claiming that he thinks
China has GPS coordinates for every American and are going to use them
to send bumblebee like drones to inject us with poison!!!! Just
about as
sane....

I don't give a **** what FB tracks. There are ways to stay "private" on
FB and there are apps available that help you customize it to your
liking, including the elimination of virtually all advertising.

You really don't have a clue do you. You can register an account on FB
using any alias you want. The facial recognition software will pick you
out of any picture and associate it to Harry Krause by the process of
eliminiation.

Through FB, I've been able to re-connect with dozens of people I've
known over the decades and meet some new people, too, including actual
boaters from all around the world, and I've hooked up with a couple of
SIGs that have some really funny stuff, travel info, food, et cetera,
and all this without any of the right-wing assholes who have destroyed
rec.boats.

You are willingly giving FB what they seek, relationships. They really
don't care about you playing Farmville and Mafia Wars they want to know
who you chat with about Farmvill and Mafia Wars.

What you don't understand is that the fact that you exist isn't
interesting to FB. The fact that you tell them that you know someone is
what they are looking for.

I think it's more of a charting of your lifestyle...

I don't play Farmville or Mafia Wars or any other FB games, nor do I
use any FB "apps," and I have only "liked" a couple of restaurants of
which I have personal knowledge. I've set up as much FB privacy as is
allowed, and I restrict those who can see my posts directly to a
relatively short list of friends, most of whom I have known personally
for decades.

Does it matter to me that FB knows that I know Judy from high school or
Joe from college? No.

The cost of purchasing ammo and who is purchasing it is interesting.
However, when you get down to the brass tacks of per officer amounts it
really is negligible.

That's odd, Mr. Internet Guru.... I use the same reader as you, and I
have no problems! And of course, name calling is what happens when you
have been found, once again, to be a complete idiot. How Harryesque.
Notice, if you will, the only ones to have trouble with the links I
provide are you, Greg and Meyer.... Everyone else says it's not a
problem!!! Hmmmmmm?

I know how to paste but I have to open a new browser instance, paste
the url, delete the space and launch it instead of simply clicking the
link.

It is really seldom worth the effort for the crap you link.

Well, perhaps if you weren't using a 19th Century news reader like Forte

If I visit with my iMac and then the next day visit
with my tablet, my stuff to read is just where I left it after I logged
out with the iMac...the old stuff I've already read is way down at the
bottom of the list. Of course, no one really gives a damn about usenet
anymore, so development ceased ages ago.

Facebook is a marketing tool, data mining specifically. There is no
other value to anyone but its users than the data and their
interconnections.

Yup, FB is real hard looking to have every face tagged.. Even try to get
your friends to put tags to your face in there.

Just about as
sane....

I don't give a **** what FB tracks. There are ways to stay "private" on
FB and there are apps available that help you customize it to your
liking, including the elimination of virtually all advertising.

You really don't have a clue do you. You can register an account on FB
using any alias you want. The facial recognition software will pick you
out of any picture and associate it to Harry Krause by the process of
eliminiation.

How, if he's never used the name Harry Krause?

Black helicopters!

Really.

It's really scary to me that FB knows my Yankee friends and I
like and frequent and buy from NYC food joints like:

Russ & Daughters
http://www.russanddaughters.com/

Katz's Deli
http://katzsdelicatessen.com/

Barney Greengrass
http://www.barneygreengrass.com/

And, don't tell anyone, but on our trips to NYC, we usually take the
Amtrak, and we talk about train travel right out in the open in FB.

Shhhhh.
