Finally a job for which you once had experience: A leading supermarket chain in New England began recruiting *scabs* on a large scale this week as the union representing some 40,000 of its workers girds for a potential strike later this month.Stop & Shop, with more than 250 grocery stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire, opened 14 recruitment sites across the region with the goal of hiring “replacement workers,” confirms company spokeswoman Suzi Robinson. The recruits would replace members of five local units of the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) union in the event of a strike or lockout on February 24, when current collective bargaining agreements expire. ------------------------------------------------------- Curious. What type of specialized training or apprenticeships are required to be a union worker in a supermarket? What a hell kind of question is that? What's specialized training have to do with supporting workers rights??? You do know that's what unions do right? ----------------------------------------------------- Because we've been lectured for years here in this newsgroup about how only union workers are truly qualified and competent for the work that they perform. Non-union labor is substandard in the eyes of some. So, I am curious as to the special skill sets of union supermarket employees. There are some people who think the moon is made out of snot. So what? do you always take fringe bull**** as something that needs a response?? There are some people here that think Palin is a brainiack and the smartest person they know. I don't have the need to mention Einstein as a rebuttle. |

Non-union labor is substandard in the eyes of some. So, I am curious as to the special skill sets of union supermarket employees. There are two major supermarkets in my area, one is union and the other is non-union. The kids, 16 to 18, don't want to work at the union store due to the fact that even if they don't work during the course of a week they are still obligated to pay their union dues. The major difference between the two stores is that the unionized one has higher prices for their goods than the non-unionized one. The question becomes what special skill set does a 16 year old union member posses in order to enable them to stock a shelf and run a cash register. Presumably the union supermarket job requires more skill than doing the same thing at the non-union supermarket and McDonald's. No. The question becomes how stupid do you have to be to use the handle BAR. |

The art of bagging groceries without crushing the bread. Stocking the right stuff in the right place on the shelves (comparison stocking). Hell, the list goes on and on. Didn't you work at a Safeway as a kid? Salmonbait You haven't figured it out yet Salmon****? It's not the end that fits in your ass. |
