19.8 metres is NOT 33 ft. But then, The Guardian has no reference
base for the real world, inhabiting as they do, the inner-city grunge
of the Left Wing.

I wondered what would occur if a large yacht of maybe 60' (that one)
were to be 'run down' by a tanker / freighter. I always figured it'd be
sunk or swamped.

Interesting to see it was 'only' dismasted.

Tonnage rules. No more need be said.

A few years ago, local private boat anchored in ship channel under the San
Rafael Bridge. Smaller tanker hit the tower fenders avoiding running down
idiot private boater. Coast Guard made the private boat liable for damage
to the bridge fenders and any repairs to the tanker. Do not know if he had
enough money, or is now broke!

The bow wave seems to have pushed them away, and they might possibly
have escaped with no damage if the spinnaker hadn't hung up on the
anchor.

I was surprised to see so many yachts sailing near that ship and also
the ship making such way. I mean it seemed to be really zooming along.
Looked like an overly congested area ripe for such an incident.
