The coldest day of my life was a bright, sunny January day in 1970 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The wind coming off the lake was just brutal. Don't know what the temp was. Second coldest, at least in feeling cold, was a February day in 1990, getting off the plane in Thunder Bay, Ontario. I was told it was 20 below zero, Fahrenheit, and that if you peed outdoors, it would freeze before it hit the ground. ![]() I have been lots of places where it was colder, skiing, hunting and on ship in the North Atlantic but the coldest I ever felt was on an ell platform in Chicago, just about any day in the winter. Taking a warm coat to Chicago is just a trick. It fools you into thinking you can actually go outside. You are supposed to stand under the IR heaters outside the hotel, dive into a Checker and run inside when you get where you are going Years ago I flew into Chicago one January. Rental was running when I picked it up at the airport, so I drove to the hotel and parked it. Next morning I went out to start it, and it barely clicked. Was -30, and with windchill close to -60! Three days later the car finally cranked, it got up to 5 degrees and it actually felt pretty good outside. You nawthuners can have it. |

We had a "pot luck" Thanksgiving lunch today at work. Our Commons area has seating both inside and out. We filled the outdoor tables; it was 77 degrees here today. It's supposed to be 29 degrees Saturday morning. Damn vortex. |

Temp in the mid-60's, sunny, bit windy, but gorgeous day. Now no more golf for six weeks. That sucks! Tooth implant this morning. So sitting in my family room, wood stove going. Supposed to rain today and tomorrow. Nice out now, sunny and cold 65. |

Thermometer in the direct sun said 14. With jump start, soon as I pressed in clutch, started like a champ. Growing up 10 blocks from San Francisco Bay, not used to that stuff. |

Cape May in February was pretty cold too. My brother spent 3 summers in the Antarctic as a SeaBee. Said it got -70f during summer storms. They could not drive the snowcats as the tracks would break due to cold. Winter, the Russians had the alcohol thermometer freeze at -125. Coldest I think I ever felt was a bright sunny day at the 1960 Winter Olympics. Did not have warm snow boots and was about 5F. Have been in colder weather, but better equipped. We spent a few days at Squaw Valley but it was summer time. We were are the Squaw Valley Creek resort, nice place but parking is a PITA. Is a nice area. Wife does not want to ski anymore, so we don't. We have friends who have Tahoe cabins, so do get up in the area. We take the boat up sometimes. But expensive for one or two trips. They have a quagga mussel sticker and inspections. Adds cost. Mostly fishing and picnic on the island in Emerald Bay. |

Coldest I have ever been in was -21*F twice. First time was January 1, 1968. I had a New Years Eve party at my house. After the party broke up I went outside and started up my car. It was my 1st car a 1959 Ford Galaxie with a manual transmission. I depressed the clutch and started the car. I let it warm up for a few minutes. It was in 1st gear. I finally started down the road. I went to shift into 2nd but the shifter would not budge. I drove about a mile in 1st gear before I could get it into 2nd and about another half mile or so I managed to get into 3rd gear. Once it warmed up it shifted fine.
The second time was in 1977. We had a place in Harrison Michigan about half way up the lower peninsula. The snow on the ground was knee deep and I decided to take a hike through the woods. With the deep snow I was actually starting to sweat from the effort to make it through the deep snow so before I got chilled I had to turn around and head back home. This past January we hit -16*F. It was the second coldest winter since record keeping began so says the National Weather Service. So much for global warming.
