![]() "E6" officially fledged this morning at 9:17 am. Returned to the nest at 9:36 when momma eagle (Harriet) delivered a fish. It looked like an accidental takeoff. He/she was on a branch exercising the wings and a gust of wind appeared to provide more lift than was planned for. Once flying though, he/she looked very confident and natural. Intruder drama continues though. With Ozzie (poppa eagle) in the hospital, there have been several "visitors" to the tree where the nest is, possibly making a move on Harriet but more likely trying to steal the food being provided to E6. Interesting to watch and listen to all the vocalizations between mom and youngster and the warnings given to the intruders by Harriet. She as gone after them a few times, chasing them away from the nest. Nature is amazing sometimes. |

I was watching for a few minutes just after sunrise this morning and he/she was looking real close, flapping from branch to branch near the nest. It's amazing that they can just take off like that maintaining direction and control. Some or all of that ability must be hard wired into their genetic code in a kind of memory that we don't even begin to understand yet. Bird brain indeed. |
