I heard a few hollywood types say that maybe those movies just sucked. I never understood what it took to win an oscar anyway since I couldn't stand most of the movies that win the 4 main prizes. The general public seems to agree because good number of them tank at the box office. Its a crazy process, and the voters are all Directors, Producers and Actors (and associated Important People in the industry). Here's how films become eligible: "In order to submit a film for nomination, a movie's producer or distributor must sign and submit an “Official Screen Credits” in early December. That's not just a full list of credits; you need proof that the film meets certain criteria: In order to be eligible, the film must be over 40 minutes in length; must be publicly screened for paid admission in Los Angeles County (with the name of a particular theater where it screened included); and must screen for a qualifying run of at least seven straight days. In addition, the film cannot have its premiere outside of a theatrical run—screening a film for the first time on television or the Internet, for example, renders the film ineligible." -Source: http://mentalfloss.com/article/54560...ominees-chosen From there, its up to the Academy members to pick their favorite films, songs, cartoons and actors. To me the whole thing is a gigantic mutual admiration society. Well, apparently the 'mutualness' is limited. -- Ban idiots, not guns! |

And once again, the McDonald's argument from you. ![]() McDonald's sells the most burgers doesn't mean the burgers are the best or even among the best. Box office success is not necessarily among the criteria for an Academy Award. Box office doesn't even enter into it but that explains the "WTF?" people have when they hear who won. (I don't watch that crap either) By a like token, there is no guarantee that black actors and directors will produce any of the best 5 movies. My guess is that they are not "arty" enough to impress the academy members. They won't drive through Compton, nor will they watch a movie about it. |
