Replacing the Cutlass bearing
Hi,
Sorry to post a boating topic to this group, but... I want to replace the cutlass bearing on Far Cove (hopefully just the bearing part, not the strut). What is involved? How hard is it to do myself (I can remove the shaft, since it will be done while the engine is out)? How much would it cost (for me to do, or to have it done)? Lloyd Sumpter "Far Cove" Catalina 36 |

Don't know if that's anything like ours but: -- We needed a puller to get the prop off the back. Boat was somone else's before and prop had probably not been off in a long time. -- Pulling shaft out with engine removed was easy. -- Taking strut off was easy. -- Had a local machine shop push the old one out and the new one in. -- Replacing all was not hard. $50? for a cutlass bearing,After shaft removel, Drill out the set
screws, if you can't slide or punch it out, Get your hacksaw, take the blade out, put the blade thru the where the shaft was, hook back up to hack saw and cut till your thru the rubber and sleeve splitting it, use a narrow flat tip screwdriver and pop/pry it out, Clean out the crap in the strut, tap out the holes insert new bearing tighten up the set screws and splash it, UD |

Piece of cake, but you may need a "puller" to get the old one out.
Ask around the boatyard. Odds are the lowly grunt gets stuck with this job when it comes up, and he might be willing to watch over you and advise for a case of Molson's or something. :-) |

Replacing the Cutlass bearing
I forgot, Some people will put the bearing in and dimple the sleeve with
the same bit they used to remove the set screws, then remove the bearing and tap the strut, but I don't. UD |

One more thing, You would be wise to take the coupling off the shaft
before engine removel,Placing a narrower than your shaft drive socket inserted between the engine/shaft couple, then using allthread in place of coupling bolts to pull the coupling off the shaft. |

It may be cheaper and easier to just replace the strut & bearing together, especially if your Catalina dealer will accept the old strut. Fresh Breezes- Doug King |
