Default 87 3.0 mercruser shift problem

Hi to everbody new member recently bought an 87 sunbird corsair with the 3.0 mercruser power plant. when in the water it is impossible to get the boat in neutral with the engine running. when pulling back on the shifter it is springy and goes directly to reverse or vice versa. it shifts ok on land with no load on prop .HELP !! thanks dusty

Most likely the shift interrupter switch is misadjusted or defective.

Sure. It's hard to know for sure until you look at it. The
interrupter is often blamed for the problem when something else
is the problem. It only takes a few seconds to rule out the
switch. And in a 30 year old boat, electrical stuff is prone to
failure. Not to mention it is likely the switch has been monkeyed
with.But, I'm sure you know all this.

Yes, I'm pretty well familiar with 30 and 40 year old boats. Electrical can be fun!
