Still do not understand people dragging a fish in the water. In the river, the surface temp is probably still 65, which makes for poor quality fish, and we do get sea lions all the way to Sacramento. They will take the fish off the stringer. Gut them and put them on ice for nice quality fish. These salmon are far enough down river, that 90% are still ocean quality meat. Further up river, they may be mush, black spawned out fish. Maybe they didn't have a permit (if required) and wanted to be able to cut it loose if the mounties showed up. You know, "Aw, it was just a dogfish, officer." Nope, see idiots tow trout in the lakes also. Warm water is not good for great tasting fish. Just have a line in the water without a license will get you a ticket. What! Have you ever tasted mahi or grouper? Not after you let them marinate in warm water for 4-5 hours after they are dead. |

Do not want to give up space for a fish cooler. Could plastic bag them and throw in the beer cooler. My late fishing partner hated for bait to be in the food cooler. My last two boats have had dive platforms which made a great spot to put the fish/bait cooler. |

That is the thought about fish on a stringer but a lot of time they die and the deterioration starts immediately. Most state and federal laws require that you are not filleting them on the water tho because it is harder to enforce size limits. Throwing the whole fish into the cooler or dropping them in a live well is the way to go if you think the cops will see you. One cannot touch a rockfish up here. The cops do check the coolers though, and if the fish looks close, they'll measure it. On a stringer the fish isn't being pulled through the water, which it would be if trolled behind the boat keeping water flowing past the gills. I've never done it, but it would seem those folks must have a reason for doing so. Trolling fish on a stringer will literally drown them. They can't control their gills and "breathe" at their own pace. |

I learned that lesson many years ago. You can make a nice live well out of a cooler and a kit from Bass Pro. Larger fish are put on ice right away. |
