Default Advice for a Battery maintainer/ tender...

Time to park the jackal and gold wing for the winter. Good time to do maintenance too to Make sure all is ready for spring.

I'll pull the batteries and store in the warm. What is a good brand battery tender for let's say in the $50.00 +/- range? If I'm going to spend more than that I'll buy new batteries...
Thanks!

I've got two Deltran Battery Tenders. They've been "on the job" in
winter for several years and do the job. They're about $50 each. If I
recall, there are models that can handle more than one battery.

These are basically just a trickle charger with a voltage sensor in
them. I made the last one I had from plans in one of the electronics
rags. It is really a pretty simple circuit tho. You just monitor the
voltage and when it drops below a certain level around 12v, it turns
on the charger.
The circuit is just a zener diode for a reference voltage, an
adjustment pot a comparator or an op amp chip and a solid state relay.
It will work with any small charger. Mine was a wall wart type thing.

I have to believe the chinese have packaged this all on a 15 cent chip
by now.

As I. Other years, I just brought the boat battery into the basement. I charged the battery and then attached a clearance type light to the posts to run for 30 days...then another charge to start the monthly cycle again. This will go on for 6 months.

Battery Tender Junior has worked for my motorcycles for many years. However, the last one made it
only about six years. But at $25 that's not bad.

I hook the terminal harness accessory up to the battery and leave it on the bike year around. Then I
can plug it in easily after a ride.

If I had your collection of bikes, I'd buy a few of those harnesses!

Why would you discharge the battery? Hard on them to deep cycle. I use to
cook the battery with the old type charger, so plugged the charger in to a
wall timer, and took the on pin off the timer, and manually turned on the
timer and it turned off in 12 hours or so. Just attach the charger and
monthly let th charger run for an hour.

Don't totally discharge....light is about a dozen LCDs
Read years ago it was good to cycle the battery rather than just let it sit..
