Actually, if you read the warning in the front of a movie, it says you
are prohibited from "reproducing" it, no matter what excuse you use.
That includes a "backup" copy or spinning it on a server.

"Warning: The unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this
copyrighted work is illegal. Criminal copyright infringement,
including infringement without monetary gain, is investigated by the
FBI and is punishable by up to five years in federal prison and a fine
of $250,000."

Let's see "hundreds" of movies at a quarter million a pop, that adds
up fast.

The same warning applies to making copies of MP3s you purchase. You
are buying one copy, the rest are violations.
