Yeah, I know. The money could best be used on infrastructure and other
expenditures that actually improve the quality of life for more
Americans. Infrastructure improvements put a lot of people in disparate
fields to work.

I agree but as long as we will not adopt the Libertarian concept of
minding our own damned business and stop being the policeman of the
world we will need those ways to project our power.
We do not want our wars to be a fair fight. We want overwhelming
superiority and a carrier battle group loitering over the horizon is
the best way to do that if we are not just going to use
intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Exactly right. Furthermore, it's not in the cards for the USA to adopt
your concept of minding our own business anytime soon. Too many
treaties and obligations to the rest of the world.

Harry's also buying into the liberal belief that a carrier is "a moving
target" in our modern Navy. It's moving all right but damn hard to hit
with all the defensive systems and accompanying ships in a task force.
Even if a couple got through, it's unlikely to be put out of commission.

Uh-huh. Right. Because we have multiple tests demonstrating what happens
to a carrier hit by a handful of missiles or torpedos loaded with a
couple of tons of HE. Oh, we don't?

U.S. allies will rest easy, Trump said, but America's enemies will "shake

We have pretty good simulations because it is not the first time we
have seen a ton of HE hitting a ship and they have these computers.
The real issue is these carriers are going to set up 100-150 miles
away with a destroyer screen and a sub or two. It is going to be hard
to get close enough to take a shot at one.
They also move around a bit themselves.
I know the chinese have a truck fired cruise missile that can hit a
ship but they still need to know where the ship is and hope an air to
air missile doesn't shoot down their cruise missile 30 or 40 miles
away from the carrier. We have some pretty good stuff on those
destroyers.

They can still have planes over your ass in 15 minutes, even when they
are not loitering just outside your perimeter.
They can keep that up 24/7 until they run out of bombs and jet fuel.
