The thing that makes her really sound stupider than she was is the
fact that he had already broken the same law that regulates
suppressors when he modified that gun he used to make it full auto.
It is also true that a "silencer" is far from making a rifle "silent".
It may work fairly well on subsonic bullets, particularly in .22 rf
like Harry's but that is not a center fire rifle.
Most of the people said they did not associate the sound with gunfire
anyway. They thought it was part of the pyrotechnics show.
It was the people being shot that made it apparent what was happening.

I wasn't aware that the details of the weapons used were released. I did
hear that one of the rifles was a .223 and another was a .308. Were
either a true full auto, a bump-fire full auto, a full-auto made that
way by modification? There were so many people pushed together in such a
small space that specific accuracy probably was not a factor.

I have not heard anything but speculation, mostly by people who don't
have a clue. One on the NBC "experts" was saying ther AR-15/M16 was a
derivative of the M1 and implied they shot the same ammo.
That is why I am not listening to any of that until we actually see
pictures of the guns used and get ballistics from the bullets.
In the end, it is really not that important anyway. The tragedy is not
changed much either way.

Maybe it *was* an AK. Is there an AK-15? I am not a gun nut.

Not really The AK74 (not 47) shoots a similar round but not exactly
the same. They typically have an orange magazine like the one OBL was
seen with.
They also make an AR that shoots 7.62x39 (the AK round)
There is plenty of cross pollination.

She assumes the police are 30 seconds away at all times. Dumb assumption.

That's all going to get a great deal of scrutiny by law enforcement of
course. Based on the sound recordings I've heard it certainly seems
likely to have been full auto, and possibly belt fed based on the
duration of fire. A 223 on full auto will empty a 30 round mag in
about 3 seconds and the bursts I heard seemed much longer than that.

Another interesting aspect that doesn't seem to have gotten any
coverage is the fact that the hotel has no apparent balconies or
opening windows. That would imply that the shooter blew out the
windows from inside as he started his assault.

I saw some media camera coverage of the hotel. Two windows were
shattered with interior curtains seen blowing about. It's obvious he
either smashed them or initially shot through them.

I read that he had a hammer - or something similar. Why he thought
about that ahead of time and didn't shoot out the windows is odd.

Those windows have a plastic inner layer between 2 sheets of tempered
class so shooting them just pokes holes in them and spider webs the
glass.
There is a show on the Outdoor Channel where a guy tries to duplicate
things you see in movies and they did the Die Hard, "shoot the window
with a 9mm and try to break it out" thing. It was under whelming how
little damage the Beretta did. The window eventually broke when he
used an HK MP5 (not how it was in the movie) but it was because it was
so destabilized that it came out of the frame, in one piece.
The right tool is probably an axe or hatchet that can cut the membrane
while breaking the glass.

The original AR was a .308 based weapon. AR10.
