Default warning, boating post.

Went to Half Moon Bay for Veterans Day trip. We were also having a crab
feed for veterans, mostly disabled. Did toss my pots on Saturday morning
as Friday was nasty seas. Saturday was maybe 8’ swells and no wind waves
too matter. We fed the Vets, and later went out to pull the pots. Had
used 4. Ended up with 7 legal Dungeness crabs, tossed back maybe 8
undersized, smaller than 6” for sport size. Released a bunch of,rock
crabs, one probably the largest I have ever caught. Maybe 8” across behind
the horns. Gave a couple to Cambodian friends this morning. They would
have like the rock crabs. Red rock crab actually taste very good, but
most of the meat is in the claws. Some just save one claw. Will regrow
on next molt. Catching will not be as good after this as commercial season
starts Wednesday. Will be a maybe 6000 pots fishing out of Pillar Point
Harbor. Boats are allowed 250 pots now I think.

Damn, I might could have flown out there for some free crab!

Good to hear of your support for those guys. Thanks.

I give some crab to Cambodian friends this morning. They run a donut
shop. Someone asked how much did they cost. I said I did not want to
know. Just the camper overnight and the launch was $50. $20 to go across
the San Mateo Bridge with a tandem trailer. Let alone $125 per pot. Plus
fuel and bait. Cheaper to buy.

I don't think all the rockfish I caught ever got the price to less than about $400/lb, and that's
not counting storage, gas, insurance or maintenance!

Similar problem here. I figure the one and only tuna I caught cost
over $400K.

I think Wayne has it right. Get a bunch of people and go on a fishing tour. And what ever monies you save there, you spend many tons more catching a mahi mahi on the LLL.👌

We never take the trawler out just to go fishing so it would be
impossible to properly apportion the cost. It makes me feel better to
think that the mahi mahi were free. :-)

Otherwise they'd be well into the 5 figure range. They sure are fun
to catch however, and real good eating.

It think it is far cheaper to get a charter than to own a boat and
fish off of it. In 1980 or so we did a $900 six pack charter (4 guys 2
days out) in Hatteras plus another $200 or so to drive down there and
get 2 cheap rooms.
For that $1100 we got about 100#s of fillets (dolphin, tuna, wahoo and
cobia). We also brought 3 billfish up to the boat. That was about as
good as it gets. We did clean our own fish.
