One of my neighbors has a mid 20s center console with a couple of large Mercs on it. He seems to like it just fine but they only go out once or twice a month, and always keep it covered in a boat lift. If he was fishing it hard every day in the Gulf, or on the east coast in the ocean, I suspect his experience would be different. That actually sounds like what most of the offshore guys run here fishing out about 40-60 miles. Those grouper cost them about $100 a pound ;-) That kind of boat made sense when gas was 45 cents a gallon. It was 2.759 the last time I filled my cans. The 50 gallons that lasts me a month or more would barely get them out of sight of land. === Expensive toys these boats. Another neighbor has a 40 ft center console with triple 350s on it. These are becoming increasingly common all up and down the coast. Cruising at 70% power burns about 70 gallons of gas per hour, probably 200 gallons or more for an offshore grouper run. Our 8 gallons per hour seems like a bargain in comparison, and we're buying diesel instead of gasoline. You have a thirsty Grand Banks. :-) Mrs.E's 36 with the single 120 hp diesel burned about 1.5 gals per hour at "cruise" (7 knots). Wide open was 9 knots, maybe 10 with a tailwind. Only did that once on the sea trial when we sold it. Cracked me up because I actually saw the bow rise slightly. I think the gen set burned more fuel when we used it than the main propulsion engine did. |

You can't swing a dead cat without hitting something similar in Charleston. They are more necessary here because the Gulf Stream is so far off-shore. About 75 miles. Haul ass out there, fish, then haul ass home. Refill and repeat. |

I think one of their claims to fame is no wood coring. It's all synthetic and won't rot. |
