I think it's a general truism that exponential growth of just about
anything is unsustainable over the long term. The numbers get get
pretty scary before leveling off however, particularly in areas with
high population densities. The Spanish flu of 1918 eventually ran
it's course but not before three separate waves of infection. The
numbers reached crisis levels even in rural areas. Unless an
effective vaccine is developed this thing could be with us for a long
time. Look at polio as an example.
