You are *still* hung up on *blocking* the virus with a cloth or non-N-95 mask. That is *not* the purpose of wearing a mask ... homemade or of the non-surgical type. "coughing into a petri dish"? Of course the virus will land there. Have the person holding the petri dish stand 6-10 feet away from the person coughing. Test wearing a mask and without a mask. Let us know the results. The point is they don't know and with no standards on what a "mask" is, they will never know. If a real surgical mask won't work (in the study) how in the hell is one of those fishermen's sun block things doing anything? Define "work". What exactly is a home-made or non-surgical mask supposed to do? If it is not stopping the virus, it isn't working. The microscopic particles that escape are the ones most likely to be able to hang in the air. Big drops would quickly fall out. |

Let us know the results. The point is they don't know and with no standards on what a "mask"is, they will never know. If a real surgical mask won't work (in thestudy) how in the hell is one of those fishermen's sun block thingsdoing anything? N95 seems to be a standard. Furnace filters and vaccum cleaner bags claim to adhere to various standards. That study done with 5 subjects seems pretty hokey and un scientific. There is very little about this mask idea that is scientific. N-95 might be the standard but only if you can find them. You also need to get the ones without the valve in front or don't bother. The valve opens when you exhale so it isn't doing anything. I haven't seen many 95s, most are just some kind of do rag. With so much unknown about this virus there are only assumptions we have to deal with currently. 1 It spreads fast. 2 It kills quickly. 3 Treatment seems to be attacking the symptoms and hoping for the best. 4 Most will survive. 5 Aquired immunity is uncertain. If there is no immunity, we are all going to die. That is unlikely tho. 6 The particle size has been estimated at 1 to 3 microns. You are off by a factor of 10. The virus is 0.1 - 0.3 microns. An N-95 is not even certified to stop it. (95% of things 0.3 microns) 7 Whether the virus needs a live host has been debated. It can live without a host, it just can't replicate seems to be the consensus. 8 Far to many people are ignoring all precautions. Define "all precautions". Most people are distancing around here, it is just the mask thing that is being debated. 9 Dr. Fretwells assesments may be correct but I'm not betting my life on it. We wear masks and gloves as appropriate Improperly handling masks and gloves makes them more of a vector for the disease than protection from it. It is no accident that in a medical environment these things are "use once and throw away" in the biohazard container. We wash hands a lot We try not to touch our faces We social distance and monitor people nearby for behavior Anything we purchase gets disinfected with Lysol in the car and or in the garage before bringing into the house. In general, we follow the latest advice from the heavy hitters. Do whatever makes you feel good. |

I don't have any problem maintaining the 6 feet, and then some as a rule. I am certainly not standing around in a crowd. |

I have really only been in Costco once in the last couple months but they limit the number of people in there, they stopped giving out free food and they cleared out the aisles so you are not bunched up. Walmart is the same way. It is easy to keep a reasonable distance. If you read the current guess, they also say the problem is prolonged contact, not just walking past someone. When you look at the recent outbreaks, that seems to be true too. They are people who were sitting in pews together or at a big party, probably passing a joint around among other things. |
