It had far more to do with talking the western states into joining the union. They feared exactly what you want. They had no interest in being ruled by a couple of Northeastern states. If you did away with the EC, a third of the states would be cut out of the presidential process completely. Why waste your money or make promises in states with less than a million or two votes in a 380 million vote election? |

You really should have paid attention in history. Most of the original 13 colonies practiced some form of slavery. Was the fact that 11 of the colonies did not want to be subservient to New York and New Jersey. The North East did not have the amount of slaves as the more southerly ones had, as agriculture was not big there. |
