There are actually 3 types of 5G, from super fast to just fast. The super fast type requires the mini cell sites placed close to each other, as you describe. That is going into the densely populated urban areas. The medium and slow speed 5G cells have a much larger footprint at the expense of speed. That's what suburban areas will get, at least at first.

No but there are a couple of flavors of 5G. The one they must be using
is simply a minor upgrade to 4G using existing towers. The real 5G is
what you said. A transmitter on every block.
I know that hasn't happened. It will require running fiber down the
street.
My wife is still a Verison fan, me not so much. I may look into that T
mobil thing when my 3G phone stops working. That may not be very soon
tho.

fell in love with Verison because their coverage was excellent
wherever she was going. These days it is really more important it is
where I am sitting than it is 40 miles out in the boonies. Neither of
us go anywhere these days. A decent base antenna on a Childrens Band
radio would reach anywhere I go 99% of the time.

Around here, cell service is great in DC, Baltimore, Annapolis, and, if
you are on one of the main highways, pretty good along them, too, but
drive a few miles away from them and service is at best spotty with all
the carriers.
