The question is: How much will it all cost?

There is no greater waste of money than a SECOND RATE NAVY. Spend the two
dollars(adjusted for inflation).

I keep telling our Brit friends that -- and every other navy in
the world. But for some reason, they don't listen...

A second Air Force is a much greater waste of money
that a second rate Navy. Seeing that it costs
6 billion dollars to build a carrier, and one exploding
million dollar bomb on a 50 million dollar jet
to sink one.

In sci.military.naval Louis V. Spielman twisted the electrons to say:
There is no greater waste of money than a SECOND RATE NAVY.

Depends upon how you're getting to "second rate" - do you mean overall or
merely in comparison to the perceived threat level? After all, I think
it's fair to say that if you mean overall then the USN is "first rate"
and no-one else manages better than "second rate"[1].

Eg: I reckon it's pretty impossible to imagine the armed forces of the
UK successfully repelling a full-blown assault by the US (well, without
saying to the president "we have Trident, which cities won't the US
miss?" grins), however I also think it's unlikely that the US will be
attempting to invade the UK in the near future!

[1] And quite a lot don't even manage that!

ZZ,
How many of our carriers have been sunk? They go out with an escort
that's hard to get by.Plus that carrier can carry that plane to within
striking range.
But I do agree with you that our Air Force should be first rate, but a first
rate Navy is no less important

Since it's impossible to imagine the UK repelling the
Washington Redskins Football team, whether or not they
can repel the US military is somewhat beside the point.

WWII carriers, many.
And since supercarriers are most known for where they can't go,
than where they can do, the question is irrelevent.

But I do agree with you that our Air Force should be first rate, but a first

Nobody has ever disputed that.
*Can the US Navy stop Iran from becoming a nuclear power?*
is the question.
