I'm in the middle of repowering my 89 Sea Ray and want some ideas on
getting a replacement engine. The motor I took out has seen sal****er
for over 10 years so it's about ready for the grave, but 454's seem
pretty hard to find locally. I've found plenty on the web, but
shipping is a killer and I'm not sure my core will be worth anything.
Some of my "expert" friends have suggested finding a wrecked GM truck,
but so far the only thing around here is a ton of 350's. Anybody got
a good suggestion? Thanks.

I have a 454 in an old chevy 3/4 ton sitting under an old oak tree on
our ranch. It ran 10 years ago. I'm in South Texas.

If you go with a truck engine, you'll have to marinize it:

USCG approved electrical components and flame arrestor
Corrosion protection
Water cooled exhaust manifolds
Oil and transmission coolers
Wet exhaust components
etc.

Why not rebuild your existing engine?

Didn't Crusader build 454s? Are they still around? You can probably get any
parts you need, but not sure how comparable the auto engine is to the marine
version in terms of casting locations for mounting lugs, etc.

Thanks for the replies. I just got a line on a local rebuilt Gen IV
motor for $2200. Looks like I'll be back in business for less than
$3k which is much better than the $21,000 quote I got from a local
marina. Good thing I don't need work on the sterndrive too!
