Voltage Regulator. Is it working?
 

I need to know if someone can tell me what the output voltage should
be on a '92 Force outboard 120HP. I want to check to see if it's
charging, but what should the voltage be? And, if it is not charging
on the output side, what should the input voltage be?

Simplest check is to check the battery voltage with the motor off and then
check it while running. It should be higher running.

OK,
I bought a new battery, the old one was dead. But I was sort of
suspecting a charging system problem. Sure enough, there must be one.
Next step: figuring out what is wrong. I checked the new battery
(duh...) it'w working. So, i fired up the old workhorse and checked
the input side of the voltage regulator with an AC multimeter. No
voltage in on that side.

Can someone tell me, should I expect that the stator is bad? Gees I
hope not, it's gonna cost some big bank. I priced one at around $175.

So is it the stator? If not, where do I check next?

The stator feeds AC to the rectifier and the rectifier feeds DC to the
regulator. The most common problem is the rectifier.

I don't have a manual for reference. You seem to be saying they are
separate modules? Is that right? Or are they separate? The parts
references that I find on the web show them to be all in one module.
Anyway, I plan to order a manual today. I'll find out pretty soon I
guess...

They make outboards with just a rectifier, rectifier and regulator, and
rectifier/regulator combined. Yours appears to be the combined. At least for
$111.77, it better be.

The simplest test is to turn on a light using the battery and start
her up. If the lights get brighter after it starts, you're
charging, some.

If you have a good voltmeter, 14 volts should be about right, maybe
a little lower if it's hard to start.

Gotta hydrometer?
