HMS permit
OK...I know...this is a boating group, but since boating and fishing go hand
in hand, and since the sal****er fishing group is almost completely dead and there seems to be a lot of expertise here, I thought I'd try here as well. I recently purchased an offshore fishing boat. I need to obtain one of those permits that used to be called a Tuna permit and is now called a HMS permit I think. I called to order one and was told that I can't get one until my federal documentation paperwork is finished...a process that the broker told me could take 6 months! I can't believe this is true. I mean...I pay 160K for a boat and can't fish on it for 6 months because I need to obtain a 22 dollar permit that they won't issue until they get around to finishing my paperwork! Is this really true? I've fished all of my life, but this is the first boat I've owned. I really wonder if the number they need is simply the Hull Identification Number...which isn't going to change, or will I be issued a documentation number when the process is complete and that's what they need to issue the HMS permit? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! Gary |
Just use what ever registration number is on the boat now if it is a used
boat. If new, get state registration for it. Here in California the state registration is on $10 for 2 years. But the tax man gets you now matter if it is state or federal registered. That temporary documentation has the hull ID and is notarized I believe. Good luck. Later, Tom ----------- "Angling may be said to be so like the mathematics that it can never be fully learnt..." That's what I thought. I have the temporary documentation, but when I
called to obtain the permit, they say that they can't use the temp number. I wonder if the girl on the phone knew what she was talking about. "Short Wave Sportfishing" wrote in message ... I wonder if the girl on the phone knew what she was talking about. I just went and looked - there is nothing about having to have a permanent registration. As long as there is a hull number and you have the correct documentation, there's nothing to stop you from getting the permit. Make sure you are asking for the recreational permit. Later, Tom |
OK...Thanks Tom!
I'll try again tomorrow when they open. Maybe I'll try it online. When it asks for the "Coast Guard Documentation", what do I put there? The Hull Identification Number? Thanks again! That or the Temporary Documentation Registration number. At the very least, I would go one level above a clerk if you do it that way. Good luck. hmmmmmmmm
I tried to obtain one online tonight. I tried entering the hull number, but it was too many characters. I tried entering the temporary number...actually, I don't have anything called a temporary number...just an "Official Number" that is on the "letter that confirms that this office is in the process of applying for Documentation of the above referenced vessel for it's owner(s)." It said that the vessel already had a permit...which it doesn't. I also went to the page where it will allow you to look up info with a permit number, but the permit number wasn't found in the system. I guess I'll have to call tomorrow again. Sigh.... I know I'm gonna get the run around too. This can't be uncommon. People buy boats every day. Don't people that buy fishing boats normally want to FISH on them when they buy them? I can't believe that there is not some system in place better than this. I'm really frustrated! Thanks for the help though Tom! If I get anywhere, I'll keep ya posted. I'm curious about this. I wouldn't settle with a clerk though - take it up the chain for a little and see how it works. Later, Tom |
