Default Handheld Garmin Legend GPS in South Florida Waters

Hello.

I just got back for testing out a boat and also took my handheld GPS
to try out it.

The Garmin Legend comes with base maps that are pretty for know where
land is ... duh, but don't supply much more info at sea.

The unit came with an interface cable (but no software) - with
shareware GPStracker I've been able to download (from unit to PC) a
route to a map image. But I have no idea how to load maps in (outside
of spending the money on Map Source).

Does anybody know - is it possible to load cheap/free maps (with road
and marine info) into the unit. It's okay if just maps without
waypoints. How and where can I find such maps? Anything marking water
depths?

I'd like to load all of South Florida down to Key West.

Thanks for any help or information.

Garmin's map interface is propriatary. If you want maps, you gotta
buy MapSource.

If you are a serious boater, you should go for it. It took a heavy fog for
me to get it and now I wouldn't be without it.
