Don't you just love it when some crazed conservative proclaims that

yeah especially when they deny us health benefits, etc.

For someone who has been laid off, Cobra costs probably as much as any
unemployment compensation. It is not the answer.

Welcome to America...

But lack of insurance while unemployed and you have assets, is a disaster
waiting. Anybody and especially someone in the high tech and especially the
semiconductor and diskdrive worlds should have enough savings to tide you
over for a year. So many people lived to the max of their paychecks. And
they were normally big paychecks for anyone with a degree.

Pay the 300 a month and the friend with the sick child must pay the
insurance if he is to be solvent in a year. If you can get family insurance
for 300 month then you are doing very well for insurance cost unless you are
in your 20's.

working Americans.

I see you are still out of touch with real life.

The Semiconductor industry has always been cyclic! You have COBRA available
to you. Take another job. May not be as high paying, or you might have to
work harder, but it will tide you over during your search for another good
paying job. And if you think, that I am full of crap, I have been through 7
layoffs, since 1979. Both big and little companies. 4 of them startups.
You do what you have to do to keep your home and health together. Have the
wife work. She may only make $10 / hour at a clerk job, but still brings in
income. Blaming your woes on the GOP is avoiding responsibility. I have
been laid off under both GOP and DEM Presidencies, and Congresses. The
Semiconductor business is one of the worse run industries around. Disk
Drives are about the only high tech industry run worse. Look into the
40plus organization for job search and interview and networking help.

Good luck in your job search.

If he got laid off with you he is eligible for COBRA coverage for 18 months.
Will cost what his company paid for insurance + a max of 10%. This is not
need based, this is a government requirement if a company with more than
about 50 employees laysoff people. Unless his employer went bankrupt and
out of business, he can get the coverage.
www.cobrainsurance.com/
do a google seach with COBRA insurance

When has it ever been the guvmint's responsibility to provide jobs? I
suppose every theater major graduate should blame the guvmint because they
cannot find a job in their chosen profession. Health insurance is availible
for as little as $50 a month, if you have a pre-exisiting condition, then
the cobra is by far the best bet.
