Default Most underrated 50HP OB?? - Another dumb question

I'm thinking about getting rid of my old Force 50 on the little boat and
replacing it with a more modern outboard. I know that not all 50HP rated
motors will develope exactly 50HP. So, whose motor is most under rated? I
have enough weight in the boat that every pony under the cowling makes a
difference.

I have done a lot of dynomometer work on outboards, unfortunately most was
on a few mercury models used for hydroplane racing. The older 50 hp 4 cyl.
from late fifties to the eighties would dyno, at the motor, not prop, 40 hp.
41 hp would be rare. The 3 cyl. 65 hp, would be about 62 hp.

15" shaft length or 20" shaft length?

If you are going to limit yourself to 50hp, look for an example of the
J/E 3 cylinder loop-charged engine of a few years ago... should produce
at least 50hp at the prop, they are a de-rated version of the 70hp
looper. They are only available in the 20" shaft, though.

For a 15" model, I'd try to get away with the 60hp Mercury Bigfoot
version, the highest hp currently/recently available in a short shaft.

Older motors were rated at the powerhead. New motors are rated at the prop.

The Force isa 1990, so it should be rated at the prop shaft. However, the
rating is +/- 10% and I think its pushing the 10% on the under side.

And with I/Os the opposite is true or so I've read ... e.g. my old '83 is
rated 185 hp (at the prop) ... rule of thumb ... add about 15% to get todays
"equivalent" which would be about 213 hp ... geez, who knows what the
horsepower will be in another 20 year ... 240? :-)
