for all good men to think about fishing next spring. What lures should one carry
for jigging, trolling, or top fishing? Spoons? Bucktails? Poppers? Jigs with Bass Assassins? What works best? John On the 'Poco Loco' out of Deale, MD |

Gonna try flycasting from the mouseboat next year, as well as getting out to Sumas River after work on the motorbike, flyrod and Vinyl Valeria strapped to the back. Got fairly seriously into flyfishing last year:
I considered that, but couldn't find any hooks small enough for the flies to bite. It's pretty easy to understand the concept, however. The lure gets whipped around in the air (where flies are), until gravity eventually pulls the line down to the water's surface. The fly fisherman then reels the line back in, and once again begins whipping it through the air (where the flies were last rumored to be, unless fished out). It's tough to imagine how it could be any sport at all. Everybody seems to use tackle that's far too heavy to give a fly a sporting chance. Can't imagine there'd be much "action" if a fly were successfully hooked. Everything's a compromise, however, and it seems that one of the challenges with fly fishing is that on rare instances the lure will become snagged on a fish as it dragged back across the water. That must explain the heavy tackle. While the gear is only infrequently snagged on a fish, after all these years I have yet to personally witness anyone successfully bagging a fly. |

Lloyd Sumpter "Tin Boat" Mirrocraft 12 I don't do the fly-fishing thing, but it is popular up in the northern part of the Ches. Bay in an area called the Susquehanna Flats. This is a spawning area for Striped Bass, and the water is pretty shallow thereabouts. Catching a 20lb striper on a fly rod would probably be too much excitement for this old man! I'll probably fly out this spring for a week. Perhaps you'll
extend an invitation to admire your fleet. Admire? Don't show up during a boat show or a deadline week and you and your family are invited for a short cruise to a decent or better dining spot somewhere on the sound. (You buy your own lunch) :-) |

At BCAdventures.com, some feather-chuckers talk about fly-fishing for salmon. A 6-lb coho or pink I can see, but if you hooked into a 20+ lb Chinook, all you'd see is all that expensive flyline spinning off the reel, followed by the backing and then snap!. (I lost one once with 150 ft of 25-lb test. Now I use 300+ ft) I'll save my Fancy Coloured Line for the trout, thanks. Lloyd |

Are you actually admitting you read the crap she posts? This is a woman who got the title role in Predator III because she needed neither makeup nor direction. For God's sake, Harry! Don't blaspheme Fishing! I pray to the Gods that be that wives around the world don't read your post, as Men will have some explaining to do. If you're a "no-fish" kinda guy, don't dump it on the rest of us. Take a ride on the Poco Loco, and pay attention. BTW- a small bare (brass) hook off the coast of Maine (Saco Bay) will catch you more mackerel than you can eat. Don't eat them. Use them for striper bait on the rock washes. You'll catch 3 *BIG* stripers for every 2 seagulls. :o) Regards, noah I'm part of the Federal Fish Feeding Program, Noah. I get paid BIG BUCKS to head out in my boat and offer up tasty tidbits to passing pelagics. A few more years, and I might be accepted into the Federal Fish Catching Program. -- Email sent to is never read. |

John On the 'Poco Loco' out of Deale, MD Around these parts, the first part of spring, when it's still pretty cool out, is usually deeper fishing for bass, like vertical jigging spoons, deep running crank baits. Or you can go out in the main lake and striper fish, usually live minnows such as trout or shiners. Then, when it warms a little and the bass are around docks, it's live lizards, they are like candy to spots!! |
