Honda 50 4 stroke vs Yamaha 60 4 stroke
 

Hi,
I have been through all the old news articles FAQ's etc but am still a tad
confused.
I am buying a new 4.75metre (16ft) Aluminiun Quintrex Runabout(Australian
brand) and different dealers have different packages.
One dealer offers a 50hp Honda 4 stroke
808cc, 212lb
The other a 60hp EFI Yamaha
996cc 237lb.
Total package price being quoted is almost the same (Yammy very slightly
cheaper)
Normal fishing use, with a reasonable amount of low speed trolling
I would love any comments/comparisons or advice regarding the two motors
please.

Two things to bear in mind. Neither is bad. Yamaha is starting to build a
reputation in the Bass Boat (read high performance) arena. Honda has a rock
solid reputation for reliability.

Personally I would look for a performance review and probably buy the
Yamaha. There is no substitute for horse power if you use your boat. You
can always back off the throttle.

Bass and Walleye Boats magazine posted a reply to a letter in the last issue
that seemed to indicate they may be looking to review more of the smaller
motors in the near future.

none of these motors is bad, so it really makes no difference. I would
go with more HP and more cc, which makes it yamaha. Also lighter is
better but the difference isnt big. If the honda is carbed then i;d
stay away and go with yamaha EFI. also consider service if you need.
do you have dealers for each nearby?

My 2002 Merc 60 is a licensed copy of the yammy. (the Merc/Yam mechanic says
they are identical).
I have been very happy with it, coming up on 900 hours. Still starts at the
turn of the key without doing anything.

Warranty service availability etc etc all being the same??? In the end
it's a personal choice, but as with the others the personal choice here
would be the Yamaha, if for no other reason than the "free" extra 10HP.

In the bigger sizes a few pro fishermen around here have started
replacing their older (very much older:-)) Hondas with Yamahas, although
that might be a local dealer related thing.

Fuel injected vs carburetted, more power, cheaper, good name, I'm told with
lower servicing costs.

Seems like the Yamaha.

The powerheads are the same. The lower unit is 100% Mercury, not that it's a
bad thing.
