OMC or Seloc service manual?
I'm trying to fix a 1990 Johnson 70 hp.
Should I buy the OMC manual for $63 or the Seloc one for $24? It needs hydrolic tilt/trim work, and maybe more. My father in law gave it to me. Apparently it runs ok. I just built a stand for it out of 3/4" plywood and 4x4's. Its very rugged. Need one? I'll send a link to photos/dimensions. |

They probably have the OMC, and maybe both. See if it contains what you want. |

Go with the Seloc manual - it's a good one and gives you the information you need. Couple of tips on the trim and tilt. If you are planning on rebuilding the lift unit, be prepared to search for the parts and/or spending some time at the NAPA seal drawers. The parts are still available, but you might have to coax a dealer into finding them for you. Removing the tile piston seal is not difficult, but it requires a special tool which you can make yourself with a couple of ten penny nails, a 2X4 and a 7/89" wood bit. Use brake wrenches when taking the pressure/return lines off piston and pump. You will never find new lines for those beasts. On the pump motor, be very careful removing it to inspect or replace the impeller - I speak from experience. Other than that, the trim/tilt is an easy rebuild. Have fun. Later, Tom |

Get the factory manual. They cover your motor and not 50 others so you have
to figure out what applies to you. "Jim and Becky" wrote in message ... I'm trying to fix a 1990 Johnson 70 hp. Should I buy the OMC manual for $63 or the Seloc one for $24? NAPA seal drawers?
And is that a seven eighty ninths inch drill bit? Or seven eights by nine inch long drill bit? Answer these questions and I promise I'll read the manual before asking more questions. Yep - commonly found at Wal-Mart and other fine establishments. Or seven eights by nine inch long drill bit? Or that. Answer these questions and I promise I'll read the manual before asking more questions. ROTFL!! I should read and edit my own posts right? NAPA has drawers full of seals for hydraulic, brake or wheel bearings. Sometimes you just have to match up a seal. I meant 7/8" wood bit which are only about six inches long. I know you can get a schematic of the trim/tilt from a Johnson dealer if they have online capability. Print one right off for you. As to the manual, the Seloc is pretty complete. You may have to search for some info as they cover a series of engines, but the information is solid. One last thing - try and see if the motor works on the trim/tilt before you go berserk trying to repair it. Black is common, green is up and white is down - that's from memory, but I think that's correct. Good luck. Later, Tom |

Pay the extra money. The OMC manual is best. The Selocs I have used
before, but I always find the info is sparse or missing. A good sturdy vise, attached to a good sturdy work bench and two sheets of 3/4" plywood laminated together works well. And you would need a short leg attached to the plywood to support the other end of the wood that is not in the vise. But the stand you made idea is great, especially if you have it on casters (wheels) and it's portable. Have fun with it :-) |
